How to switch windows when searching multiple documents with "Open each new document in a new window" enabled

Post by rakunavi »

Hello all,

First of all, I am using in a multi-monitor environment, so I enable the "Open each new document in a new window" setting in "Preferences / General / Tabs and Windows" and do not use the tab feature. In the setting, the window does not automatically switch when displaying search results across multiple documents. Setting the advanced search pane to floating mode does not solve the issue.

If you enable "Single document mode" in the same settings dialog, each document corresponding to the search result will be displayed, but literally in "Single document mode". Is there any way to switch windows to display search results across multiple documents while maintaining multi-window settings, as in Acrobat?

  • desktop.png
Please see the attached verification video for more details.
The corresponding timecode in the video is also included. ([MM:SS] "MM" shows minutes, and "SS" shows seconds.)

  • [00:04] It shows that Acrobat with tabs disabled can perform a search across multiple documents and switch to the window corresponding to the search results.

[00:28] With "Open each new document in a new window" enabled in the PDF-XChange Editor, the search is performed across multiple documents and the window corresponding to the search result is opened, but it is not automatically switched to the new window.

[00:58] If you enable "Single document mode" in PDF-XChange Editor and search across multiple documents, the document corresponding to the search result will be displayed. However, multiple documents will not be opened.
Thank you for taking the time to read this message.

Best regards,
rakunavi

Hello, rakunavi

Thank you for the report I have reproduced this and spoken with the dev team. They confirmed that this is something they aim to have resolved for the upcoming release. Hopefully it can be completed in time.

Hi Daniel,

I have confirmed that some improvements have been made in build 368 to the feature I pointed out above. Thank you for taking the time to make improvements so quickly. After trying it out, I understood that it is supposed to be used with the search pane in floating mode. However, there are several points that could be improved, which I would like to report below.

Point 1
If a search is performed with no files open, and after showing the first result, another search result is shown for a different document, a new search pane is opened, which needs to be closed. Once closed, the new search pane will not be opened on subsequent searches for other documents, but the initial action of closing the search pane seems wasteful.

Point 2
The search pane belongs to the main window where the search was performed, even if it is in floating mode. Therefore, when showing search results across different documents in sequence, the original search pane becomes active once, and then the document with the desired search result is shown and becomes active. It takes only a moment, but it is not smooth.

Point 3
When a window and a search pane are placed on the same monitor, the position of the window is shifted by 20 pixels in the X direction and 19 pixels in the Y direction for the second and later documents opened among the search results (when the scaling setting of the monitor in Windows is 100%). If this behavior is added to what is pointed out in Point 2, the screen transition when switching between results is floppy and unsettling. In a multi-monitor environment, this issue does not occur when the window is maximized on one monitor and the search pane is floating on another monitor.

Point 4
If you open the search pane with the window maximized, you need to manually adjust the size of the document window, even if it has been set to floating mode beforehand. It would be nice to have the ability to properly place the window and search pane on the same monitor, like the [Arrange Windows] button on the search pane in Acrobat.

Point 5
Until build 367, it was possible to show multiple search results in order using the shortcut keys (up and down arrows), even with the search pane in floating mode. Of course, as mentioned at the beginning of this topic, there was an issue with the window not switching when the search results span multiple documents, but the shortcut keys were still usable. However, with the update of build 368, the shortcut keys no longer work, even when showing search results within a single document. It is quite unfortunate that the floating mode is now practically limited to mouse operation only. Of the total of five points mentioned in this report, this is the issue that affects usability the most.

I have attached a verification video and 12 sample documents used in the verification.
The corresponding timecode in the video is also included. ([MM:SS] "MM" shows minutes, and "SS" shows seconds.)

  • [00:04] Open the search pane. Since it was set to floating mode when it was last closed, it will appear in floating mode without you having to do anything.
  • [00:07] Unmaximize the window and manually adjust it to the appropriate size and position if necessary. See Point 4 above.
  • [00:09] Search for multiple documents by specifying folders and using "a" as a keyword.
  • [00:11] Show the first result "April.pdf".
  • [00:12] Show the second search result "August.pdf". At this time, please confirm that the search pane is newly opened as soon as the search result window is displayed. Also, make sure that the search result window has moved to the lower right corner of the first window. See Point 3 above.
  • [00:14] Close the search pane that is subordinate to the "August.pdf" window, as it is no longer needed. See Point 1 above.
  • [00:15] The third search result "February.pdf" is shown. At this time, confirm that the window switches to the pink "April.pdf" for a moment, and then the desired "February.pdf" is shown. After that, when you switch between search results, make sure that the pink "April.pdf" window is shown for a moment. This is what I pointed out in Point 2. Also, as pointed out in Point 3, the position of the "April.pdf" window is different from the position of the subsequent windows, so the screen transition when switching between results is floppy and unsettling.
  • [00:37] Launch Acrobat Reader. Make sure that the window is maximized in advance.
  • [00:39] Run Advanced Search.
  • [00:41] Make sure that the Arrange Windows button is enabled. Confirm that the window is automatically unmaximized and that the search pane and window are properly aligned without any action. See Point 4 above.
  • [00:43] Search for "a" as a keyword across multiple documents by specifying folders.
  • [00:49] Switching between multiple search results does not cause the problems noted in Point 2 and Point 3.
Thank you for taking the time to read this message.
Please give my best regards to the developer.

Best regards,
rakunavi
