[Resolved] Print a booklet

Post by reglis »

Hi,

I tried for the first time to print a booklet.

The cover is properly printed on the front of the first sheet.
Page 1 is printed on the right, not on the left on the back of the first sheet?
Page 5 & 2 are properly printed on the back of the second sheet.
Page 3 & 4 are properly printed on the front of the second sheet.

I don't understand where the problem is coming from? What am I doing wrong?

I partially solved the problem by printing page 1 by checking Right Binding.

Hi reglis,

I believe the page assignment by the application is correct. The page view in the dialog-box counts the cover page as page one (see Figure A), but you seem to count the page after the cover page as page one (see Figure B). This difference may be the cause of your confusion.

Hoping that the above information will be of some help to you.

Hi rakunavi,

No confusion, I mentioned the page numbers of the document.
For my part, I get this?

Hi reglis,

Thank you for your confirmation.

What happens when outputting to a virtual printer such as PDF-XChange Lite or Microsoft Print to PDF? That is, does the issue occur only when a specific printer (Canon iX4000) is selected? If you have that information in advance, it may help the Tracker support team.

Unfortunately, I don't have the same printer, but here the output is normal for both real as well as virtual printers. I attach a file output with PDF-XChange Lite for your reference. If the output from the virtual printer is normal, it may be a temporary workaround to output to the virtual printer first and then print to the real printer.

Hi rakunavi,

Microsoft Print to PDF, PDF24, PDFill PDF Writer, no problem :D

The problem therefore comes from a parameter of the printer pilot. I will investigate more.

Thanks for this Rakunavi,

Reglis, it should not be printer dependent. We are doing this the same way as Adobe and others.

Are you manually feeding the second side? We see no reference to any "duplex" in your settings and wonder if it is simply a case of feeding the paper the wrong way?
Best regards

Hello reglis,

Does your printer take the A4 sheets in landscape mode? If it supports printing to A3 paper sizes - likely the A4 is fed in landscape mode rather than as most printers do it in portrait. So can you please try these options:

And let us know if that allows you to produce the correct paper orientation?

Hi Stefan,

I'm sorry I couldn't answer earlier.

No, my printer takes A4 sheets in portrait mode. Duplex: Auto, None, Long Edge or Short Edge, no change :evil:

I did many tests and I realized that:
With a duplex printer, I would have printed all pages and page 2 is well on the left in the preview (and I imagine in printing).
Duplex Printer
Duplex Printer

With my no duplex printer, I print pages 1,6,3 and 2,4,5 and page 2 is now on the right in preview (and printing)?
No Duplex Printer
No Duplex Printer

I modified all the parameters and no change.
Sorry, but I think the problem comes from PDF-XChange Editor and not from me or my printer :oops:

Hello, reglis

I think i see the issue here. Because you are separating the page ranges into separate prints, that is what causes the issue. You should not be doing that, as it makes page 2 be considered the "cover page"( the same as page 1), so it does indeed assume you want it on the right side, as that would be the cover page of a left bound booklet.

If you print the whole document in a single action you should have the following:
Page :: Left side :: right side -
Cover :: blank :: 1
Inner cover:: 2 :: Blank
3rd sheet :: 6 :: 3
4th sheet :: 4 :: 5
What this will result in after printing is a stack of paper that, when folded in half and stapled along the fold, goes like so:
cover page
-flip
page 2 and page 3 facing each other
-flip
Page 4 and 5 facing each other
-flip
page 6 facing a blank sheet
-flip
back cover blank.
In the end, your no-duplex print method is the cause of the problem here, you will need to print the entire booklet as a single print job, not as two separate manual jobs, If you enable manual short or long edge duplexing, you can then print the front sides flip as needed, and continue with the back sides printing, but ensure that you leave the batching at the hands of the application, do not try to manually print the duplexed sheets, as that will not work.

Hello again!

Just a followup after looking into this a bit more, The booklet option does actually offer the option to print the "front" or "back" of the booklet exclusively, which would make it possible to manually send two separate print jobs, if you are more comfortable with that. Simply ensure you have the entire page range selected for both prints (to ensure that the page placemtn calculation remains the same for both jobs.

First print the front pages, then replace the paper and print the back pages
