How to change Pop-Up Note background color

Post by ironick »

I just upgraded to PDF-Xchange v 9.4, build 363.0 from and older (8.x) version. I love the changes with one exception so far. My Pop-Up Notes are now hard to read. In my old version, I tried to create a "dark mode" look. As part of that look, I changed the Pop-Up Note font color to white and the Pop-Up Note background color to something dark.

Here is how my Pop-Up Notes currently appear:

In v9.4 the Pop-Up Note background seems to default to a semi-transparent whitish-gray. How can I change the background color and opacity for Pop-Up Notes?

Thanks,

Hello, ironick

Pop-up notes are not longer affected by the UI customizations, in the past the text and background color were affected by the main UI colors. To resolve this, you will need to reset your UI settings and then re-do your customizations, then you should see your comments revert to something like this:

Hi Daniel,

Sorry, I don't understand your instructions. On the Customize User Interface Appearance Panel in the Preferences Dialog, I reset my Theme to Default, with Allow Dark Mode from system checked. As a result, the "chrome" of PDF-Xchange looks fine. But it has no impact on my Pop-Up Notes.

I went into one of my Pop-Up Notes, right-clicked in the text box and from the context menu selected Text Style|Clear Text Formatting. This changed the text to black font, which is what I need. I also right-clicked and from the context menu selected Text Style|Make Current Text Format Default, which fixes any new Pop-Up Notes I create to use black font.

But I don't see how to bulk-apply the Text Format Default (which is now black font) to all existing Pop-Up Notes. When I highlight all the Pop-Up Notes in the Comments pane, I don't see any menu choice or button for applying the default text format. The Style Tools drop down in the Commenting Tools|Format ribbon is grayed out when I select multiple Pop Up Notes in the Comments pane.

How can I bulk change the dozens of Pop-Up Notes I have in each of my pdfs to use the black font?

Thanks,

-- Nick

Hello, ironick

My apologies, I misunderstood what the report was. Unfortunately there is no way to bulk apply text styles to comments, as selecting multiple comments only selects the "container" and cannot affect the text within them, you will need to enter each comment and then apply the text style manually.

Wow. That wasn't the answer I wanted to hear. I have thousands of comments in white font.

I did some searching on the web and it appears that others have successfully mass/batch/bulk changed the font color in comments by using the JavaScript console in Adobe Acrobat. See here for example:
https://community.adobe.com/t5/acrobat-discussions/batch-edit-properties-on-existing-comments/m-p/9998024#M110848

I hope the JS console ( https://help.pdf-xchange.com/pdfxe9/ ) in PDF-Xchange can perform similar operations. Anything I should know about the PDF-Xchange JS console, other than what's in the help pages, before I attempt this?

Thanks,

Hello, ironick

Our JS console should work just as Adobe's does, with the exception for some features flagged in the Adobe JS API manual as "Security" features which we do not support. If it can be done that way, it should work for your needs.

You can find a copy of the JS api manual here:

Great. Is there any way to add a custom button to a PDF-Xchange ribbon to execute a JS script? Or do I have to open the JS console and paste in a script for every pdf I want to convert?

Hello, ironick

Yes, i do not have a sample for how to change the text Style of comments, but here is a sample of the JS which both adds a button, and runs a re-order pages command.
Reorderpage A1B1.zip
(482 Bytes) Downloaded 20 times
You can simply replace the re-order pages JS with your custom command, and then update the button container information as desired.

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for the sample file. I also found this entry in the knowledgebase:
https://www.pdf-xchange.com/knowledgebase/510-How-do-I-add-a-custom-tool-to-the-toolbar-using-JavaScript-in-the-Editor

With both in hand, I think I can figure out how to add a button to do the comment text font color conversion.

Thanks again for all your help,
