You can not go back to the text from the footnote

Post by francois maurice »

Hi,

I'm using Editor 7.0 build 325.1 on Windows 10.
  • I'm using PDF-XChange Word plugin.
  • There seems to have a problem with footnotes.
  • You can not go back to the main text from the footnote.
  • In other words, the small number of the footnote is not active.
Is this a normal behaviour ?

Thanks,

François

Hello francois maurice,

Are you referring to the foot notes inside the Word document or in the resulting PDF?
Can you please provide a sample file and some screenshots that will illustrate the problem and we would then be happy to assist you further!

Regards,
Stefan

Hi,

I'm referring to the footnotes inside the resulting PDF.

In the second page of this PDF there is 8 footnotes and each one has the same problem as described in my previous post.
If you click on a number inside the main text, all is fine, you reach the note.
But you can't come back to the main text by clicking the number inside the footnote.

Here's two files:
The first one is the DOCX file
The second one is the PDF file generated by PDF-XChange Word plugin.

Thanks,

François Maurice

Hello francois maurice,

I'm not sure if I understand correctly what "the small number of the footnote is not active" means.

Do you mean that the "Go to Footnote" in this list, it's not working after the conversion?

Could you please tell me what version is your MS Office suite?

Hi,

I'm using Word 2016.

I'm not sure to understand what you mean by "Go to Footnote" . Is it a PDF-XChange Editor feature or a PDF standard ?
Just to make sure, the problem is not with the DOCX document but with the PDF document. If it is a problem !

For my part, the little numbers I'm talking about are those on the left of the footnotes in the list that you circled in red (superscript number).
If I click one of those little numbers I can't return to the main text where I came from when clicking a little number in the main text.

As an example, if there is footnotes on a web page, you can click first on the little number in the main text to get to the footnote. From there you can click on the small number at the left of the footnote to return to the main text where you came from.

Here's an example from an academic journal. This article has many footnotes. If you click one those little numbers in the main text you get to the footnote in the bottom of the page. From there, you can get back to the main text to continue reading by clicking the little number at the left of the footnote.

But maybe this is not a PDF standard.

I know that I can use ALT-Left Arrow to return to the last position in a PDF file, but this is not a trick that my website visitors know necessarily and this is not exactly what I need.

I hope I am a little bit clearer.

Thanks,

François Maurice

Hello,

The current version V7 build 325.1 of the PDF-XChange Office add-in for Microsoft Word, does not convert the links on the footnote numbers at the bottom of the PDF pages. In Microsoft Word these numbers have links that refer to the footnote references in the text itself.
I do not remember if this ever has been in the resulting PDF.

In the resulting PDF, there is only a link on the footnote references in the text itself.
When you click onto such a reference, the cursor jumps to the concerning footnote at the bottom of the page.
What currently is missing, is the possibility to jump from a footnote number (at the bottom of a page) to the footnote reference in the text.

I do not remember if there have ever been requests for this ...

Best regards.

Hello All,
Willy thank you for the explanation, very well written.
As for the "footnote return" request, I was unable to locate any prior requests in our backend system, so I will be looking into making one shortly for you.
