Need to Disable the Updater on Users Machines - NON admins.
Hi,
We don't give our users Admin rights.
We are using VMware View and a product called Unidesk to push out our apps and OS layers.
Thus - we do one master install of the App - then propagate it out to our users. During the recording of the install I make sure to Uncheck the option to Update.
When I give the App / Layer to users it reverts back to checking for updates Weekly. (or perhaps whatever the user had it on last )
Locking down the workstation then having an app pester the user about updating is generally not good. :p
Is there a command line I can put on PDFXedit.exe to stop it from auto updating ?
Is there a service I can kill to stop the updates ?
Perhaps a GPO to change a registry key ? Remove a reg key to stop automatic updates.
In essence i need to change all my users' PDFxchange apps so they never attempt to auto update. Any ideas how to do that ?
thanks much.

Hi Larry,
Looking over my email correspondence with eganco, I believe that it did. I've attached a ZIP file that contains the Reg. Key and a plain text version. HTH!

Re: Need to Disable the Updater on Users Machines - NON admi
When will we be able to completely uninstall the Tracker Updater?
We have a company network of almost 40.000 clients and we don't want the users to install anything by themselves. If there's an update, we'd like to test it first and distribute it afterwards. Setting the update check cycle to "never" isn't satisfying, because anyone can change it back to daily or whatever.
I've been in contact with support last fall and I've been told, that this would be considered for one the next updates.

Hi heidl,
Thanks for the post and welcome to the forums!
I would suggest pushing a script to delete the Update folder from the Program Files directory.
i.e. RD /S /Q "C:\Program Files\Tracker Software\Update"
HTH!

Re: Need to Disable the Updater on Users Machines - NON admi
So you suggest to deliberately break the installation, so that PDFX will be unable to load the TrackerUpdate.exe?
Wow, even though the result may be satisfying, this is a rather quick and dirty solution! One that by the way leads to an error message, if the user attempts to start the Updater within PDFX.
Do you also have answers to my initial questions?

Hi Heidl,
I'm afraid that currently, this is one of few options. You could also try pushing a script to rename the extension on the executable.
We are planning to implement a method that will simply disable the update and either remove the option from the menu completely, or just grey out the update option. We hope to have this available for the next release.

Re: Need to Disable the Updater on Users Machines - NON admi
Have there been any changes to this? Is the ability to disable AutoUpdate now available? Can it be done through the registry?
Thanks,
Tucker

Hello tuckerv77,
A complete disable of the updater through registry only is not yet possible, but take a look at the early posts from Will in this topic - there is a registry key that can be set to turn the automatic check for updates off, and if users manually try to run it - they will not have the privileges.
Regards,
Stefan

Hey Stefan,
Thanks for the update. Is this something that is being looked at for future versions?
Be Well,
Tucker

Hello Tucker,
As Will mentioned above - we have plans to improve this, but there are other things in the ToDo list as well, so I can't yet give you any specific dates when further improvements to the updater tool (and control over it) will be added.
Regards,
Stefan
