PDF-XChange Editor Review

Post by Bhikkhu Pesala »

I have updated my review for the Editor. Some sections that apply to the Viewer haven't been removed. The Editor is not feature complete yet either so some users will still be using the Viewer.

My review update is a bit of a rush job, but I will update it later when the Editor gets a bit more polished.

Updated for the Editor ver 3.0.307.

As usual, please let me know if you find any errors. I haven't had time to test every feature thoroughly yet — there are a lot of changes in the latest updates.

I am sure that a History of Changes page would be appreciated by many if/when you have time.

Thanks Bhikkhu, as always :)

As for the Changelog, I believe that this should already have been updated for build 307.

Cheers,

Thanks for that. Now added links for both changelogs — Editor and Viewer.

I made some minor updates to my review page for build 310.

I don't have time to be thorough yet, but I ran the speed test results with the latest versions of Foxit and Adobe to compare, and you will be glad to know that PDF-XChange Editor still comes out on top.

I ran my speed tests again on the latest 313 build of the Editor, which seems to be getting slower. Was 2 seconds for the single file search compared to only 1 second in the last free version of the Viewer, but it is now taking 3 seconds. It is still faster than the competition, but its lead is decreasing. Foxit Reader hasn't been updated since the last test, but I still have the latest version. Adobe Reader has been updated twice since the last test in 11.0.9.

Searching for a word in a 1,180 page file.
  • PDF-XChange Viewer 2.5.308.2 found 710 entries in 0:01
  • PDF-XChange Editor 5.5 build 313 found 710 entries in 0:03
  • Foxit Reader 7.0.3.916 found 710 entries in 0:06
  • Adobe Reader 11.0.11 found 710 entries in 0:14
Searching for a word in 8 folders of 369 documents

My personal collection of PDF documents, some of which may contain the search string several times, while others may not contain it at all. Most of the test set doesn’t change.
  • PDF-XChange Viewer found 3371 entries in 102 documents in 1:08
(including page content, document information, bookmarks, and comments)
  • PDF-XChange Editor found 3314 entries in 97 documents in 1:36
  • Foxit Reader found 3,138 entries in 96 documents in 5:05 (much slower than earlier versions)
  • Adobe Reader found 3404 entries in 102 documents in 7:10

Hi Bhikkhu,

Thanks for the review - I'll test here and will let the Dev. Team know about the slow-down.

Find Text just got significantly slower in the new build. Searching a long document of 1180 pages:

● PDF-XChange Viewer 2.5.308.2 found 710 entries in 0:01
● PDF-XChange Editor 6.0.317 found 710 entries in 0:26(This compares to just 0:03 in build 515.303)
● Adobe Reader DC 2015.010.20060 found 710 entries in 0:15
● Foxit Reader 7.3.4.311 found 710 entries in 0:06

Finding a search string in 397 files in nine folders also took longer

● PDF-XChange Viewer found 3529 entries in 115 documents in 1:11 (content, information, bookmarks, and  comments)
● PDF-XChange Editor found 3406 entries in 110 documents in 9:09
● Adobe Reader DC found 3569 in 115 documents in 10:35
● Foxit Reader found 3,362 entries in 110 documents in 5:20

Maybe you should write this report to an extra entry in the main forum. Seem to be a serious thing.

Hi guys,

Sorry, I had forgotten to post back here as there's another topic for the same issue. This was reproduced and a ticket created (RT-3491).

Thanks,
