Pagination of pages before document page 1

How can I get the title page, table of contents, and other front matter on my PDF to display a number before 1? I've seen PDFs where the front matter has a1, a2, etc. I want the document page #1 to be page #1 on the PDF and everything before it to either have no number -- or have some alternate number.

I created the PDF from Word 2003, using PDF X-change 4 Pro.

Hi Judy,

the Office Addin does not support the creation of PDF documents with these. They are called 'page labels'. I can see that this might be something that others could also find useful so I have added it to the wish list. This is not a promise to deliver the feature however it is a commitment to look into.
