No reaction on new files in folders

Post by Peter2 »

Maybe I misunderstand the software, but I can see no real "online watching" of folders.

It works if
- I drag&drop a new folder to watch AND the folder has already files in it
- I start the program and it founds files in the folder

But it does NOT work when
- I add new files to the folder when the software is already started.

Also the "Go-button" is always disabled ...

What's going wrong?

Regards

Hi Peter,

what does the Office2PDF screen look like with the watched folder set up? YOu should be able to see both the watched folder and when you add files to that folder those files get listed. See my screen shot.

Once the conversion is complete those files are no longer listed.

Do you see anything like this?

Hello Paul

I will describe what I'm doing:

1) Start the program. Standard view, but dialogue is in German (my settings from last test).
2) I drop a(n empty) folder to the window. The software asks me in English "Do you want to ...": YES
3) The software looks like image #2.
4) I drop two other folders to the software. The software asks me again - again YES.
5) I see only the first folder in software.
6) I copy some DOC to the first watched monitor. Nothing happens.
7) I close the program.
8 ) I start the program. It looks like image #2, software asks me in German "Folder .. contains files, to you want to ..): YES
9) Software looks like image #1, the docs are converted.
10) Job is done -> image #2.
11) I copy a DOC and a XLS to folder - nothing happens.
12) Close and start program again: It works again.
13) While the software is working I press the "Wait ..." Button. The software does not wait and continues all jobs.

Peter

EDIT: Drag&Drop has problems with network-drives. Local drives are OK.

Thanks for the detail Peter,

I see something similar when I add a second watched folder. I will need to consult my developer who is responsible for Office2PDF. One of us will post here when we have something to tell you.

It seems that the whole issue is based on network-drives.

I tested now with watched local-drives: The "real monitoring" works fine.

Please discuss also the "small issues" like language, "Wait-Button" and so on.

Thanks Peter,

I tested also using network drives. Perhaps the issue is network latency? It worked fine for me using a mapped drive for a single folder. I will ask about this as well as the wait for sure.

Hi Peter,

the feedback is as follows:
  • The 'Wait' button means that users should wait for the end of the conversion process.
  • "real monitoring" indeed will not working on network drives - this is limited by Windows.

Hello Paul

thanks for the feedback which makes it more clear now. But please take a look at two suggestions:

"Wait"-Button:
For the user it is confusing to see a button which can be pressed and does nothing. Maybe it would be better to disable this button and display a message in the statusbar when the software is working.

no network-monitor:
Maybe you can add a feature which checks the entered path and tells the user that "Network paths are not or only partially supported". (I don't know if this is possoble.)

Thanks and regards
