auto update isn't supported in the portable version because of the lack of access to thew registry.

We deliberately do not perform automated update checks because our user base has overwhelmingly indicated that they do not want the software initiating external communications without being expressly initiated.

Check for updates works in the installed version when user's choose to check. You can always check the RSS feed here: http://files.docu-track.com/viewer_history.xml

Alternatively the email for support notifications as Chris suggested will tell you when an update is available.

but what would you think of the idea to offer an option to set for automated update checks?
Setting for automated update checks would be purely optional.
This is what a program like, for instance, CCleaner offers. The user can choose to set it to automaticly check for updates, or set it not to check for updates. CCleaner now asks on install what's the desired setting.
I think this would be a good thing for those users that are less 'update aware'.

I would also vote for this as an option. Opera has three settings:

1. Do not check for updates
2. Notify me about available updates (IMO this should be the default setting)
3. Automatically install updates (this is the default setting)

With installation, integrated in the installer, there could be an option to choose for "Do not check for updates" and "Notify me about available updates" (or even "Automatically install updates", also).
This option to choose that setting would then be offered with each update.
Of course this option would also be available in the Preferences menu.
This is what CCleaner does, as I mentioned last Thursday, 9 December.
