Preview for Windows Desktop Search
Do the Shell Extensions allow previews of pdf files in the Preview Pane of Windows Desktop Search? It isn't working for me.

Re: Preview for Windows Desktop Search
Hello irv,
Are you referring to the Preview Pane in explorer in Windows 7?
If yes we are aware that the shell extention is not working flawlessly with the previews in Explorer in Windows 7. We are doing our best to solve the issue.
Regards,
Stefan

Re: Preview for Windows Desktop Search
No, I meant using Windows Search 4.0 for Windows XP. Rebuilding the search index may have helped, but the solution was likely using Group Policy as explained here: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums ... 7460516aca and here: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums ... e3f3e76c7b
Anyway, the PDF preview is working now! However, the zoom is always 100%, even though the preferences are set to Fit Page by default and view settings for each document is supposed to be saved. Can you fix this zoom bug?

Re: Preview for Windows Desktop Search
Hi irv,
did you set that under Edit --> Preferences --> Page Display [category] --> Default Page zoom.
What do you have set there? I'm using 42.1 and I can set the default Page Zoom correctly. What version are you using? Can you upgrade and try again?

Thanks. Showing the Menu toolbar within the preview and settings preferences from there worked.

Excellent - thanks
If posting files to this forum - you must archive the files to a ZIP, RAR or 7z file or they will not be uploaded - thank you.

Re: Preview for Windows Desktop Search
We are using PDF-XChange Viewer build 2.0.46.0 running on MS Windows XP Professional SP3 and Internet Explorer 8.0
We are able to see the PDF Preview in Windows Search 4.0 ONLY IF the "Display in Browser" option is enabled. As we would normally want links to PDF files to open outside the browser, we have disabled this option.
Selecting a PDF file in Windows Search 4.0 with the "Display in Browser" option disabled, results in an error message - Unable to access file 'res://ieframe.dll/navcand.htm#FILENAME', and the file opens but no preview is generated.
Is this an expected outcome due to the option selected. It might be interesting to note that the PDF preview is successfully displayed within MS Outlook 2007 and PDF thumbnails successfully displayed in Windows Explorer.

Re: Preview for Windows Desktop Search
The reason is because Windows Desktop Search opens files into browser when cannot handle them directly, instead of using Preview interfaces used by shell under Vista/Win7 and Outlook 2007/2010

Re: Preview for Windows Desktop Search
Thanks for your prompt response Ivan ... but am a bit confused and would appreciate your clarification.
We would like Windows Desktop Search 4.0 to display the PDF using the preview interface.
What is the reason it "cannot handle them directly" and instead has to open the file?

Re: Preview for Windows Desktop Search
I'm not sure why, but I think the reason is because Preview interface was introduced into Vista/Office 2007, and even to allow Outlook 2007 to handle preview under XP, some additional steps from developers are required.

Re: Preview for Windows Desktop Search
Thanks once again Ivan, but I don't think we have addressed the issue.
As previously mentioned, we are using MS Windows XP Professional SP3 and PDF-XChange Viewer build 2.0.46.0, which was installed using the MSI with Shell Extensions selected.
We are able to view PDF thumbnails in Windows Explorer, Preview PDF Attachments in MS Outlook 2007, and even Preview PDF files in Windows Desktop Search 4.0 - if the "Display in Browser" option is enabled ... so it shouldn't be an issue with the PDF file.
We get the error message - Unable to access file 'res://ieframe.dll/navcand.htm#filename' ONLY IF the "Display in Browser" option is disabled, and the file is opened and no preview is displayed. Why does disabling the "Display in Browser" option cause the preview to fail?
