PDF-XChange Viewer - Portable Version now available..
Further to numerous requests ...
A fully portable version of the PDF-XChange Viewer is now available for download - it is also much smaller (4MB approx) as all help files have been removed by default (can be downloaded if required)
This allows the Viewer to be run directly from a CD/DVD, Memory stick etc without a formal installation - just 'unzip' and use.
Please see the main downloads page :

Will the portable version run on a PDA?
I have a Windows Mobile 5 PDA which I would like to run the viewer on for form filling and viewing (and printing from, hopefully), along with form data export and import. - Maybe even export to and import from XML.
As an aside, when is it envisioned that data import functionality will be incorporated as a standard? At the moment exporting to FDF files is fine but these then need opening with Acrobat Reader - and then no more data can be updated.

Hi rij: "Portable" doesn't mean it is for Windows Mobile devices. It means than Portable version of the PDF-XChange viewer doesn't requires installation and doesn't use registry or other common resources on the computer (except temp folder) to work. So, you can use it on your flash drive as your personal portable PDF viewer whenever you can use this flash drive.

The portable version is a welcome addition and perfect for showing the program to friends without having to install it first
I have to say that i was somewhat disappointed to see the settings file as a binary fine instead of an .ini or .xml. Some times it's easier (for me at least) to directly modify the registry (or the settings file in this case) to modify some setting and it just can't be done with a file that only the program understands.
Anyway this is minor and certainly non a show stopper for me.
Cheers

Hi Jakob,
they are in fact the same product - the only issue you may face is that the serial number is stored in the registry - so this may cause issues and require to enter on more than one occassion via the preferences option.

Main difference between portable and non-portable version is where settings are stored. Portable version store all settings in file which must be in same folder where executable is located, non-portable version use registry to store settings. So if you change settings (or enter key) for non-portable version - portable will be not affected, and vice versa. More, if you have two copies of portable version - they will have different settings, so you must adjust settings (or enter key) for each portable copy separately.
One more thing: if portable version cannot store settings (for example it is runnig from CD or any other read-only media) it will not notify about this.

Hallo,
that's the behavior I would have assumed. The registry key is stored in my portable version, but I nevertheless don't get the PRO-functions.
In the non-portable version entering the key after installation didn't work either. I had to re-install and entering the key during the installation process.

Strange, cannot reproduce this. Can you try change any other setting and check will changes remain between sesions? If yes - can you check file Settings.dat after entering key and exiting - was it updated or not?

Re: PDF-XChange Viewer - Portable Version / gdiplus.dll error
to answer my own question
I've installed the "normal" PDF-XChange Viewer version and searched for gdiplus.dll on drive c: and found several instances of the library. I copied the gdiplus.dll from the normal PDF-XChange Viewer version into the directory of the portable version and now the portable version ist starting!

Re: PDF-XChange Viewer - Portable Version now available..
GDI+ is used by the viewer for printing. We didn't include it into portable version to reduce size of package, and because on almost all systems it is already installed - it is only on some versions of Windows 2000 it may be required.

Re: PDF-XChange Viewer - Portable Version now available..
Hi!
Is there an option, to open a file on specific page, like I can do from url (#page)?
Something like "PDFXCview.exe file.pdf /page=10" ?
Would be very useful together with /close.
Regards,
NoSi

Yes, there is parameter for such action. Whole description will be available into help file for build 39.
For now, you can use:
/A "page=number", where number is zero-based page number.
HTH
P.S. Please note, /A should be specified before file name.

Re: PDF-XChange Viewer - Portable Version now available..
Hi,
thanks for this info - but it does not work. PDF opens always at page 1, regardless which page number is given.
I am using 2.0039 RC2 - 4th of August.

Re: PDF-XChange Viewer - Portable Version now available..
Example command str:
PDFXCview.exe /A "page=2" "C:\Test.pdf" // open specified document and go to second page
but last build contains issue and this sample does not work.
The temporary workaround:
PDFXCview.exe /A "page=2&zoom=100" "C:\Test.pdf" // added 'zoom=100%' parameter
This issue will be fixed in next build.

Works perfect for me - better than only opening, because I can set a zoom value, too. THANKS!!!Vasyl-Tracker Dev Team wrote:workaround:

Hi,
is it possible to transfer with the "/A"-parameter a zoom-value "pagewidth"? I tried a view things, but they did not work as desired.

No effect. Keeps the last zoom settings.Ivan - Tracker Software wrote:Can you try to use "zoom=FitH" ?
Edit: Other transferred setting (page) are ignored - opens with last view.
