Recognition range of mouse operation when handling line annotation

Post by rakunavi »

Hello all,

Imagine that you draw a thick line with the line annotation tool. If you move the drawn line by dragging with the mouse or delete it from the right-click menu, you must move the mouse cursor over the annotation as a preliminary step. For example, if the Hand tool is enabled, the mouse cursor changes from a palm hand cursor to a line annotation cursor when the mouse cursor is over the annotation, indicating that the user can now drag or right-click the annotation. However, the recognition range of mouse operation when handling line annotation is significantly narrow. Even more annoying, this range does not increase as the screen zoom ratio increases, making the operation more difficult.

In Acrobat, on the other hand, any part of a line can be freely manipulated, whether by dragging or by deleting from the right-click menu. I have taken a line as an example, but the issue applies to arrows, polygons, etc. It does not seem to be an issue that can be solved by settings, so I will report it.

The blue line at the top of the page is a line annotation of 72 pt thickness, and the red line at the bottom is a figure for explanation. The red line is also drawn in 72 pt. The narrow area in the center of the red line is the recognition range of mouse operation when handling line annotation as described above. Please check by dragging the blue line in the sample.

Please see the attached verification video for more details.
The corresponding timecode in the video is also included. ([MM:SS] "MM" shows minutes, and "SS" shows seconds.)

  • [00:04] With the Hand tool enabled, move the mouse cursor from the top to the bottom of the blue line annotation to show that it changes from a palm hand cursor to a line annotation cursor and back to a palm hand cursor again.

[00:12] Off-center of the blue line, try dragging or right-click menu, both of which fail. Note that "failure" in the latter case means that the right-click menu corresponding to the selected annotation (e.g. "Delete") is not displayed.

[00:32] Only when manipulating a very narrow area in the center of the blue line, can the drag and right-click menus be used.

[00:40] In Acrobat, any part of the line can be manipulated. It corresponds to the area indicated by the red line at the bottom of the page in the Acrobat sample.

[00:55] In the PDF-XChange Editor, increasing the screen zoom ratio makes it difficult to see where the centre of the annotation is, making it harder to operate.
Hoping that the above information will be of some help to you.
Thank you so much for your continued support.

Best regards,
rakunavi

Re: Recognition range of mouse operation when handling line annotation

Hello rakunavi,

Many thanks for the detailed explanation!
I agree with you that it would be much more intuitive if you could click any area that seems to be part of the line itself. So I've made a ticket:
#6424: FR: Hit area of line annotations to scale with the size of the annotation
And as soon as there are any news from our devs we will post them here.

Kind regards,
Stefan
