[Feature request] Vertical tab bar - All tabs placed vertically

Post by vjuhasz2 »

Hello,

It would be great to be able to have an option to place all those tabs vertically. Instead of having a horizontal tab bar (as it is currently), where the tabs are becoming smaller and smaller, and more illegible, it would be nice to have an option to place the tab bar vertically along the left or right edge of the screen. The benefits of this option would be multifold:
- more vertical space for documents
- as most screens are 16:9 or 16:10, displaying the tabs vertically it makes sense, allowing wider, more legible tabs on the side.
- less scrolling, more convenience, more productivity.
A lot of browsers these day allow vertical tab placement - MS Edge, Vivaldi etc. (see image)- so it's the modern standard these days anyway.

If this gets implemented, please allow a sorting option for the last opened document(s) to be always be placed on top, rather than on the bottom, minimizing unnecessary scrolling. Many thanks.

Hello, vjuhasz2

Thank you for the suggestion, I will ensure that the Dev team review this request, but I cannot promise a change at this time. In the meantime, you can use the tab dropdown button on the left side of the current tab menu to see a vertical list of your current tabs.

You got my +1 vote for this,
maybe even an option to verticalise the whole toolbar and not just the document tabs would be nice too. Just so that you get more vertical screen estate.

Hello,

I am sorry that i forgot to mention this earlier, I have created a format feature request ticket for this. While I cannot promise that the change will happen, hopefully we can see something in the future.

Thank you Daniel, I am aware of the dropdown button. The idea would be to have the tabs permanently placed / shown vertically (with an option to show newest documents on top) - not just temporarily in a popup window. :-)

Well the ticket is in and I personally love the idea. The ball is in the development team's court now.
We'll just have to see what they choose to do with it.

:)

Seems like we got what we wished for. :)

However, it is another extra toolbar and not the same as the horizontal one, and that is fine by me.
Nevertheless, I have one question:
Is it possible to fit more than 1 row of favourites in the vertical tab? I seem to have been unable to drag and resize the vertical tab... It would be nice to fit another 2-4 rows of shortcuts

Hello MedBooster,

You can't make the "Quick Tools" toolbar two columns wide, and it is part of the "Document Toolbars", but I managed to create a new custom one - effectively doubling the width to two columns - and the second one is also fully customizable:

Seems like a good trick, thanks.

Also;
maybe you should make the toggle for expanding a shortcut like the stamp one be under and not to the right, as you can see, this single toggle arrow makes the whole bar wider...

Also;
is there a way to only make one vertical toolbar appear if you have two documents side-by-side? (as an optional option, because in some cases it is useful to have one vertical bar for each document even though they are in the same overall window) :)

Hello MedBooster,

If you add a command that has a submenu - there's currently no way to have the triangle at the bottom in these vertical toolbars.
You can however add specific tools. If you are making it quick access toolbar - direct access to the custom tools will likely be more desirable :)

For your second enquiry - if you have the "Quick Access" vertical toolbars - they will indeed appear for each of the documents showing side by side:

But the custom bar will only show once:

(The "hidden" items on my screenhots are the content/thumbnails/bookmarks panes - as they were making the screenshots overcrowded with information that is not relevant for the questions asked - the Quick tools are not there at all when they are turned off in the customization window.)

Kind regards,
Stefan

thank you for the tip!

And the screenshot I wanted to send wasn't sent for some reason. Here it is, in case you didn't quite get what I meant by the expandable arrow/triangles

Hello MedBooster,

I was not aware at all that you tried to attach a screenshot before. In any case - there was a button with that triangle in my screenshot in the post above yours - so I did figure out what you had in mind, and answered accordingly.

Kind regards,
Stefan

Hello. My 2cents worth.

Would love to see a proper vertical pane that shows all open files. The pane should ideally be an additional pane that does not share the same screen space as the Bookmarks, Thumbnails etc pane. Or indeed the Advanced Search Pane.

An additional feature might be the option to group open files into buckets and have the ability to label each bucket (two level tree structure).

Thank you for listening.

Hi Kanjun,

it almost sounds like you are looking for a different approach to "sessions". How would the "buckets" you describe differ in functionality from sessions other than the presentation in a pane I mean.

warm regards

Hello vjuhasz2,

I am afraid that this hasn't been implemented yet.

Please note that I cannot confirm when or if this will be available in our products.
