Special character of font not embedded

Post by Muber »

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to create a PDF from a word document, but a single special character (µ) is not displayed correctly in the resulting pdf. I did the very same thing probably more than 100x now, the big difference is that I changed the fonts in the word file to align them to corporate identity.

My settings for font embedding:
image.png
µ is present in two fonts: Sofia Pro Regular and Relative Pro Bold.

This is how it looks in the PDF for Sofia Pro Regular "µ" characters:
image(1).png
image(1).png (1.93 KiB) Viewed 460 times
And this is how it looks in the PDF for Relative Pro Bold "µ" characters:
image(2).png
image(2).png (3.28 KiB) Viewed 460 times
I'm using Win10 and PDF-XChange Editor Plus, version 9.4, build 364.0.
Any help how to resolve this issue is highly appreciated. It was quite some work to change the fonts and I don't want to change them back.

Best,
Muber

Hello Muber,

Can you provide us with a sample page and also an image of how that μ symbol looks like in Word?
Would it be feasible to change the font only of the μ to a different font that supports it?

When converting the Word file to PDF - are you embedding all used fonts?

Kind regards,
Stefan

Hi Stefan,

Sure thing. Here are two pages of my document:
Extract.pdf
(98.97 KiB) Downloaded 18 times
Page 1 shows the Sofia Pro error
Page 2 (lower left table) shows the Relative Pro Bold error

And here's how it should look like (exported from word as pdf - unfortunately the quality is not good enough):
Word Export (low quality).pdf
(1.84 MiB) Downloaded 19 times
I'll check whether I find a similar looking system font, that's a good idea!
I hope that I'm embedding all the fonts that I'm using, otherwise the settings shown in the first image of my first post wouldn't work properly, right? I also tried it with the option to embed only a subset disabled, just to be sure that the character is not excluded for some reason. But that also didn't help.

Regards,
Muber

Hello Muber,

Your Word export is with bad quality as Word has actually rasterized your original text and converted it all to images:
image.png
And when you zoom in - the separate pixels are visible:
image(1).png
The text in the Editor file is actual text that you can edit:
image(2).png
But it seems like there is an issue with the way that μ is copied from the word to the PDF file.
I could edit a text area inside the PDF file and add the μ (I've deliberately not yet removed the ? symbol):
image(3).png
image(3).png (22.15 KiB) Viewed 450 times
So if you need to publish a copy of this file urgently - maybe manually adding the μ will be an acceptable workaround?

And as for the underlying problem - can I please have copies of the fonts (the files that are used to install them in Windows) as well as a sample of the original Word page - so that I can run some tests here on our end and pass this case to our devs if necessary?

Kind regards,
Stefan

Do you know by chance if this could be changed or whether it is always like that?

Well, I guess I'll have to do that. Next week though.. It would take too much time now just before the weekend

Thank you very much for the help!

Hello Muber,

Thanks for the e-mail with the fonts and sample file.
I managed to convert it correctly with this option turned on:
image.png
So please do make sure that it is enabled on your side as well and all will be good!

As for the Word rasterization - that is beyond us to control, and you might need to check with MS whether there are any ways to stop that rasterization.

Kind regards,
Stefan

The "Font"-settings for "Embed Extended Font/Character Info" are only available via the PDF-XChange MS-Office add-in for Word (part of the PDF-XChange Standard Printer package) and via the printers "PDF-XChange Standard" or "PDF-XChange Lite", not via PDF-XChange Editor.

Kind regards.

Hello Willy Van Nuffel,

Thanks for the above! Indeed Willy is correct that those settings are for the PDF XChange Standard drivers, and the MS Office Add-in that comes with it.

Kind regards,
Stefan
