PowerPoint files containing Japanese vertical writing are not converted to PDF correctly.

Post by rakunavi »

Hello all,

I have found that when a file created with Microsoft PowerPoint that contains Japanese vertical writing is converted to PDF via PDF-XChange Lite, some text orientation is not displayed correctly.

Since this is the same issue as previously reported in the following topic, I have verified it using the same strings.

  • vertical writing
    https://forum.pdf-xchange.com/viewtopic.php?p=81427
I have attached PDF files created by three different methods as follows, but only those created with PDF-XChange Lite have the issue.

  1. Printed with PDF-XChange Lite (VText_PowerPoint_byPDFXChangeV9.pdf)
  2. Converted from PowerPoint's Export menu to PDF file (VText_PowerPoint_byPowerPointExportFeature.pdf)
  3. Printed with Microsoft Print To PDF (VText_PowerPoint_byMicrosoftPrintToPDF)
The PowerPoint print preview screen (correct result) is shown below.

In contrast, the result generated by PDF-XChange Lite (incorrect result) is shown below, with the incorrect part highlighted with yellow markers.

Hoping that the above information will be of some help to you.
Thank you so much for your continued support.

Best regards,
rakunavi

Hello, rakunavi

Another report, and another ticket made:

#6197: Bug: Convert form PPTX, does not retain text orientation.

Thank you again for bringing this up, I was not able to create my own PowerPoint document which reproduced this issue, but I expect it has something to do with the specific japanese version of the font in use. Thankfully I was able to reproduce the issue using you sample files, even though I do not fully understand why it is not working as expected.
Hopefully the Dev team will be able to get to the bottom of this issue.

Hi Daniel,

Thank you for taking the time to look into this in detail.
For your information, the version of PowerPoint is Version 2207 build 15427.20210, which is automatically installed with Microsoft 365.
Hopefully the root cause will be found.

Best regards,
rakunavi
