Send Email over SMTP office365
Hello, everyone,
When running in PDF-Tools, I wanted to send an e-mail without a dialog being displayed, but with the e-mails being sent directly to the SMTP server.
But this does not work with Office365!
Can someone from the PDF Tools team help me with this?
According to the IT staff, the registration does not work correctly with Office365. The credentials are correct and will work on another software.
(with PDF X Change it is the same problem)
Have someone an idea?
Kind Regards
Xmedia

Re: Send Email over SMTP office365
Hi Xmedia,
I just tested this and it is working for me. What settings are you using for the SMTP?
Use the email address for the "From" and "Username" fields, and use port 587 with TLS and it should work.
If you turn on all these logging options you should see feedback as to what is happening in the Tool Report at the bottom:
I hope that helps.

Hello Paul,
Thanks for the quick feedback.
I checked the settings again and they were set identically.
But I still get the same error message:
Tool run results: the specified handle is invalid
Do you know this error message?
Greetings

Hi Xmedia,
that looks like the Editor not PDF-Tools. The two share common code and the set up is the same and it should work the same in both, but for the sake of the troubleshooting can you confirm which you are doing?
Or are both Tools and the Editor failing the same way?

Re: Send Email over SMTP office365
Hi Paul,
Yes its the same:
I tried the following:
Attempt 1:
All settings from "Office 365 Account 1" entered, both in PDF XChange and in PDF Tools. Everything from home...
Attempt 2:
All settings from "Office 365 Account 2" entered, both in PDF XChange and in PDF Tools. Everything from home...
Attempt 3:
All settings from "Office 365 Account 1" entered, both in PDF XChange and in PDF Tools. Everything at work.... Since I've tried using the same account settings in 2 different places, I'm assuming it can't be the firewall, etc
Kind Regards

Re: Send Email over SMTP office365
Thanks for that Xmedia,
It's time to check our software versions.
What version of the Editor and Tools are you running? For troubleshooting we need you to be using the current version, 9.4.362.0 as I write this. Please confirm this issue is happening with the current build. Help then About will report the version number and Help then Check for Updates to get the newest if yo are not already there.
We also need to know what version of Windows you are running. There may be an issue with changes to TLS. If you type "winver.exe" at the Windows Start menu you can get this: and it will show you what we need to see:
looking forward to seeing this.

Hello, Xmedia
I have some good news (and a little bad news).
The good news is, I have managed to reproduce this issue, and our Dev team is looking into it now.
The bad news is, With the release coming tonight, it is too late to implement any new fixes into the release. Hopefully this is something that can be resolved with tweaks to settings either in our app, or in your outlook account, but I cannot promise that just yet.
WE will get back to you with more details on this as soon as we have finished the investigation.
Kind regards,

Re: Send Email over SMTP office365
Hello again,
Another bit of followup, The primary message you are seeing: Indicates that there is no account under the outlook SMTP system to utilize, this means that either your SMTP is not configured correctly, or your email account is not actually under the outlook system, perhaps it is through another, such as Gmail, or requiring a custom connection.
As for the issue utilizing the custom SMTP, as per the image you sent in the "Add/Edit SMTP server" dialog, this is very sensitive to your server particulars, and can be interrupted by firewalls and other security features if not configured correctly through BOTH our app and you mail server. You may need to ask your Email system Manager to help you configure this correctly, as some services require that the mail server security be configured to allow third party app access.

Hi Daniel,
This already sounds very promising
I like to wait here for your new info.
Regarding the message "Error MailLib":
Yes, I will discuss this with our system administrator.
Many thanks for now
Adrian

Sorry Adrian, That blurb up there was new new info we had to add, that is all we could discover from the investigation on this end. I hope that trying those suggestions helps to resolve the issue.

Re: Send Email over SMTP office365
Hello Daniel,
In the company, I have already checked a few points with the system administrator.
- We have checked all settings again.
- We have checked all ports
- We tried to send various emails, but nothing appeared on the network or in our firewall.
- The conclusion is that the email is not sent by the PDF-Tools software at all.
The message still remains the same:
If you can reproduce the error yourself, we have a point that you can work with in development.
I am looking forward to the solution
Many thanks in advance
Kind Regards
Xmedia

Hello, Xmedia
Our Devs are looking into this once again, though I will admit I am stumped on this one personally... In the meantime, my next best guess would be to suggest you ensure you have tried all three outlook options and ensured that none of them work for these tools. If one of these does work, please let me know which one it was, so we can compare and see what differences may be in place.

Hi,
I have now checked one setting again.
And now also configured all 3 variants and tried to send an email.
You were also able to detect the "error".
Have you found a solution for yourself?
Outlook Webmail:
It asks for the password over and over again here, but no email is sent. I know this behaviour from other software too. Since a change in the Microsoft API, this loop occurs.

Re: Send Email over SMTP office365
Hello, Xmedia
Unfortunately my reproduction of the issue was a red-herring cause by my own blunder in the configuration... After re-checking the details It worked as expected for me. Now with that said, the Dev team is preparing a specialized Debug build for you which should be able to log the process and errors you are encountering, so that you can reproduce the issue once, and then we can investigate the data and try to locate where the fault lies.
I will send you an email with that debug version either later today or early tomorrow. If the email address you used to create your forum account is sufficient, No action is necessary on your end. If you would like me to send the email to a different address, please send us an email from the address in question with a link to this post, asking that I send the debug build to you there.
[update]: In the process of making the debug build, one of our devs spotted an issue that could very likely have been the cause of the problem. They are fixing that right now, so that when we send you the build to test, hopefully it is already fixed! This fixing process does mean it might take another day or two before I can send you the build, but hopefully this means we can cut out the step of needing to go back and forth debugging the issues, and get you a solution faster.

Hello, Xmedia
Yes, the issue has to do with something a bit more intrinsic than we can offer a hotfix for, but thankfully we do know what the cause is now. As such, you will unfortunately need to wait until the next release is available before you can use this feature with your outlook account.

Hello Xmedia,
I see that Dan's previous post is from August 2022 - so there have been plenty of new builds since then.
If you are still having the issue - can you please confirm that you are having it now in build 385 of our PDF-Tools (the current latest)?
Kind regards,
Stefan

Re: Send Email over SMTP office365
Hello, Xmedia
Office 365 recently underwent some drastic changes to their systems, swapping to a web based alternative for outlook, which may very likely have recreated issues like this. I am quite certain that we had fixed this in the past, and that it was working as expected before now.
The dev team has had this topic brought to their attention, but I expect this will be another re-work required because of changes on Microsoft's end. For now, you will want to proceed sending mail manually.
