Character Set for Exported Comment fdf file.

Post by Tanifuji »

Japanese characters are corrupted when open the exported comment file (.fdf) with text editor.
Japanese characters are OK in the exported bookmark file if opened as UTF-8 character set.
Even if apply UTF-8 character set, Japanese characters are corrupted in exported comment file.
Which charcter set should be used to get correct Japanese character?

Hello Tanifuji,

Welcome to our Forum.

Could you please tell us what version is your PDF Editor?

You can see this information in the PDF Editor's Help -> About menu.

Also, could we have a copy of the exported comments file?

Regards.

Hello, Tanifuji

Thank you for the example, Could we ask you to please share a copy of the original PDF document, and the actual FDF file, instead of a copy/paste of the content, so that we can troubleshoot directly? You can upload any file format to our forums by placing them within a Zip folder before you upload.

Hello again, on second glance, and after speaking with our Dev team, I caught something that I missed in my first read.
Tanifuji wrote: Fri May 27, 2022 2:31 am corrupted when open the exported comment file (.fdf) with text editor.
You are trying to edit the FDF file with a text editor? This is not the intended use of FDF files, and is not something we can support, FDF is essentially a more restricted version of PDF, which is why some content is (not corrupted, but instead) encrypted/illegible to human eyes.

I understand your comment that the fdf file is not for user's edit.
We circulate PDF document for review in our office and everybody put comments if necessary.
The person in charge just copy comments on PDF and paste to Excel sheet to prepare comments list.
We want to reduce such burden work to extract comments form fdf file.
If you add such feature in PDF-Xchange, it will be big advatage ahead of your rivals.
Don't you have any suggestion for our problem?

Hi Tanifuji,

does the "Summarize Comments" option help?
image.png
It can be used to export all the comments to a variety of formats, including CSV. Maybe take a look at that and see if it is a fit for your use case?

I am keen to hear what you think.

Yes, it is very helpful and no problem for Japanese characters.
Thank you very much.
Could you consider to add coordination (X, Y) as option since we often use bigger size drawings.
Moreover, if you can convert this summary to fdf file, we maybe find advances usage of comments on PDF.

That's good to hear Tanifuji.

I floated the suggestion about including coordinates in the CSV to the devs, I'll post back here what they decide.

Hi again Tanifuji,

I am afraid the Feature Request to export annotation coordinates to CSV has been rejected by the dev team because of the challenges in deciding what coordinates to export for certain annotation types, like the line or pencil. Some annotations require more than a single coordinate to define.

regretfully
