Wrong bold text
Hello.
1. In one of my documents Editor displays the Type 1 font "SabonLTStd-Roman" in bold. The same font in another document is properly displays as standard.
2. Furthermore, when I enable "Colored Search Results" in the advanced search pane then all preview text becomes bold. This happens in any document, so it is likely not related to the 1. issue.

Re: Wrong bold text
Hi Timur,
can you send a sample for item one?
I can't reproduce item 2 even with your file. You are on 9.3.361.0?
I am not seeing this on the attached PDF. Do you?
cheers

Hi Paul,
no. 2 does not happen on your attached PDF, so my assumption is that the use of Type1 fonts in my PDFs causes the bold search font issue.
I will send you an example PDF via e-mail.

Re: Wrong bold text
While extraction a single page to create an example document for you I found the culprit for the bold search font: bookmarks! If I do not extract bookmarks then search doesn't go bold, if I export even only the bookmark for the single extracted page then search gets bold. And if I create a new bookmark for *your* example document then it happens, too.

Re: Wrong bold text
hmmm
I still can't reproduce this. I must be doing something wrong.
If the behaviour is dependent on the presence of bookmarks maybe you can produce for us two similar PDFs, one showing the effect and one that does not? At least that would cut to the chase on the "reproduce this" part?
Does that seem reasonable?

Re: Wrong bold text
Turns out that proximity has to be set to anything other than simple adjacent words the bolt search results to happen. And of course you need to enable "Colored Search Results".

Re: Wrong bold text
I also sent you an example (extracted page) PDF for the bold Type1 font problem, that wasn't bolt in earlier Editor versions (as far as I remember) and isn't bolt in another PDF file.
Editor build 361.

Re: Wrong bold text
It's still not happening for me. Would you humour me and test resetting your settings to defaults and see if that changes the behaviour?
Please export your settings to file first so that you can both restore them yourself and if necessary send to us.
When did you send the PDF for item one? We've had some staff off sick and I can't find it. May I ask you to send it again?
sorry.

Re: Wrong bold text
I'm dummy.
I have reproduced #2 now, I was looking at the document not the search results. Doh!
I'll show the devs and see what they say. Thanks for sticking with me through this!
Now for the document for #1 - sorry again to have misplaced that.

Re: Wrong bold text
My fault for posting two bold font related issues that likely are not related in a single thread. No wonder things got confused.
I sent an e-mail to support@pdf-xchange.com just 1 hour ago. Titled "Wrong bold text" with a link to this very thread and an appended PDF called "Bolt Font Example". I now sent it again.

Re: Wrong bold text
The problem is especially visible in the thumbnails of the corresponding pages. They are drawn very black due to all the extra bolt fonts.

Re: Wrong bold text
Thanks Timur,
I see what you mean. It's obvious in both the main window and thumbs:
I'm just waiting back from the devs. Sorry for the delay here.

Re: Wrong bold text
The text in this document has a 1px border, but it looks like Adobe is cheating a bit, and we will have to do similarly.
RT#6072: PDF renders in bold in the Editor but not in Adobe

Re: Wrong bold text
The 1 pt border does *not* seem to be the problem. For comparison, here is the first printing file of the same book, also using a 1 pt border:
Compared to the second printing file:
But I just noticed that Editor prints each character of the second printing twice on top of each other, once with 1 pt border and once without border. As a consequence you need to press cursor right twice when you try to navigate the text via cursor keys. This does not happen with Adobe or the first printing of the file.

Second character:
Both selected the same T in the document. I navigated between the two stacked versions via cursor keys:

Re: Wrong bold text
Every (or almost every) piece of text in this document is duplicated.
The first time it is rendered with just a border of width 0 and a second time with a fill. Width 0 by PDF specification means that the border should be rendered 1 pixel wide no matter of zoom level. That's what the Editor did and that causes that 'bolding' effect on the text. In the next build, we will render this border with some additional transparency to make it less visible. It is not by the spec but looks like other apps went this way.

Re: Wrong bold text
Thanks for the analysis. I will report this back to the creator of the PDF as I suspect this to be unintentional (1st edition file doesn't have this).
Both Acrobat Reader and Foxit do print these pages more bold than their 1st edition version, just not as overwhelming bold as Editor does.
The other difference is how the "Select Text" tool handles the duplicate text. Where Acrobat and Foxit use one cursor step per character, Editor uses two.
