"Change bars"

Post by zznhl »

Hello,

Does PDF-XChange Editor provide a utility to attach "change bars" beside any altered or edited content in .pdf's?

Thanks

Hello zznhl,

I apologize but could you please give me more details about the request you have because I'm not sure if I understand you correctly?

Also, if it possible please give some example about this feature ( screenshot of application that has this, drawing... )

Regards.

Thanks for your interest.
In Adobe Acrobat Pro, when editing or changing content, it is possible to denote the places where changes have been made by utilizing a setting which automaticaly places a vertical line beside the text that has been altered, added or deleted. Please see the attachment.

Is this possible in PDF-XChange Editor?

Thank you.

Hello zznhl,

Thank you for the description and screenshot. Unfortunately the Editor does not currently offer such a feature. I have created a feature request ticker for this, but at the moment with only once voice speaking to the desire for this, I cannot promise that it will be implemented any time soon.

For reference, you can ask any member of our support team about the following:
RT#4760: Add "Change Bar" functionality as Adobe offers

Thanks very much for your attention. Its such a shame that this feature does not as yet exist. I can tell you, as a technical writer, a change bar feature is super useful when dealing with folk who need to review large volume documentation changes, where the reviewers are faced with multi-page doc that has only a few changes or revisions and need to wade through hundreds of pages to find them.

Hopefully your developers will see the utility of such a feature and add it ASAP.

Thanks again,

Nick

Hello Nick,

Can you please show where that setting is exactly in Acrobat DC (from what I read it's available in the FrameMaker only)?

Cheers,
Alex

Sasha, Hi.

Yes, you are correct. I apologize for the confusion. This feature is part of FM, not Adobe.
On a different level, in my opinion, this feature would give you a distinct strategic advantage over Adobe. In my trade, I have noticed a movement away from FM, looking to more flexible and dynamic solutions.

Thanks

Hello Nick,

The feature itself sounds interesting, though it's implementation can be a little tricky. For example, you are editing the text block somewhere at the middle which can be whole page long. All of the text below will be shifted downwards as you edit it. Thus the question - does the shifted text need to be marked or not? If not, then somehow we'll need to find the resemblances and mark only them. Note that you can also change the style of the text (like size or font name), not the text itself - should this also be marked?

Cheers,
Alex

Any text that is changed, altered, added, or deleted could be indicated by a vertical line alongside. The height of the line governed by per line - That is, if one character on one line is edited, the indicator would be one line high. If a sentence spanning several lines is edited, then the indicator would span the relevant lines.
It would also be useful if the indicator could be customized to designate various colors and thicknesses, as well as being referenced in a side panel that allows comments to be added.
Of course these criterion could also be applied to objects such as inserted pictures or screen shots etc.
No need to mark the consequences of such edits, such as the one you mentioned of anything coming after the edit moving down or up the page.

          Thanks

          Hello Nick,

Thank you for the continued interest, We are looking at beginning the process of implementing this, and are testing a few options. Might I ask for a few screenshots of the menu's where you would enable this option, along with two copies of a document, one before, and one after a small change has been made to reflect the change bar?

          Thank you!
