Remove links (bulk and quickly)

Post by asocialis »

OK, I previously talked how Chrome prints to pdfs but of much larger file size (around 15x), and reason was that text is image actually.
But that does not happen in Chrome's internal print to pdf option. In that case file size is only slightly larger (around 4x) than in Firefox.
Figured out it is because of links (urls). Is there any way (I know there is option to remove links in Optimize PDF option so far) to remove all links with one click or least effort from one document? Is there option to do it with many documents? Is there option to just remove links without touching anything else? Optimize pdf has so much options that I find complicated. I only want to remove links, and based on that get smaller file size. Of course in some cases links may be useful to keep, but for most pages I don't need them.

Hello Asocialis,

To quickly remove all web links from a document, you can us ethe "Web links > remove all" function from the Home tab:

Thanks, that worked. But links are not that much responsible for file size.
Before removal of links file size: 169 KB (173.320 bytes)
After: 156 KB (160.256 bytes)
So considering that file size of pdf is similar to file size of html saved via save page we and print edit we extensions combination, which is 180 kB. I may as well save as html, the main advantage over ordinary mht or mhtml and html being that print edit we saves them in printable look and with reduced file size over mhtml/mht and is not like html + files separately but all in one file like mht/mhtml. Or use firefox if file size is more important, to not waste time on pdf optimizations, and to not have separated pages and to keep urls...plus it is easy to later convert, edit or print if needed.

Hello asocialis,

PDF and HTML are vastly different file formats - and a direct comparison of their sizes is not usually the main consideration when someone decides whether to use PDF (Portable Document Format) and ensure that their content looks the same, or HTML - which even on your own machine might change in appearance with you just resizing the window in which that is rendered.

As for the size - PDF would also usually include compression - so if it is text heavy document - the PDF might end up significantly smaller than an HTML file which has a lot of overhead (this is not to say that the PDF pages do not have overhead).

Ultimately the decision which of the two file formats (or a third one) to use is yours!

Regards,
Stefan
