Miscellaneous questions

Post by deesee »

Hey there,

I love PDF-XChange Editor, but I have some questions (v6.0 322.7):

- Is there a way to make every pdf file open by default with the window maximized? For some reason, most windows I open are not maximized, and it becomes an annoyance to have to maximize every new pdf file. (Once I maximize the window and then close all the open pdf files, it then seems to 'remember' to open it maximized the next time it is opened.)

- I placed the button for "Bring to Front" and "Send to Back" on my toolbars for easy access, but they are always greyed out. When working with multiple shapes that I draw on the pdf, I can click the "Bring Forward" button to move it forward one position at a time, but I can never click the "Bring to Front" button to bring it all the way to the front in a single click. What am I doing wrong?

- When I use the Typewriter Tool, I can type text where the overall text box automatically expands just long enough to fit all the text. However, if I try to select the text and Center the text, then the overall text box immediately expands to the far right side of the window making it massively oversized for the text. I can manually resize the text box, but if I edit the text any further it once again automatically widens out to the far right edge.

I hope my questions are clear. Thanks in advance!

Hello Dee,

Thank you for your post.

(Once I maximize the window and then close all the open pdf files, it then seems to 'remember' to open it maximized the next time it is opened.)
This is not something that can be set, however, the Editor should open in the previous configuration even after you restart, so in theory, you should only need to maximize it once.
The function will be greyed out unless there is an object selected with which it can interact. I am afraid that "Bring to front" is misleading. It should be "bring forward".
- When I use the Typewriter Tool, I can type text where the overall text box automatically expands just long enough to fit all the text. However, if I try to select the text and Center the text, then the overall text box immediately expands to the far right side of the window making it massively oversized for the text. This is the expected behaviour with the Typewriter tool. It expands to the edge of the page, then centers the text within the bounding box. With Left justified, the starting point is where the carat is initially placed. No change to this behaviour is planned.
If posting files to this forum, you must archive the files to a ZIP, RAR or 7z file or they will not be uploaded.
Thank you.

Bring Forward, Send Back

Post by capncavu »

Greetings. Using Editor v6 build 317.1. Two questions, please:

1. I'm reading in the posts about "Bring Forward" and "Send Back" buttons. My program does not have these buttons, nor are these functions in the Drop-Down Menus. I have a text box that is covered-over by a rectangle, and I need the text to be visible on-top of the rectangle. Would be a simple fix with "Bring Forward" - but why don't I have it? Is it a module or Add-On that I must install?

2. What I'm attempting to do is alter/edit my document by covering-up some of the embedded original text in the PDF with my new text. I can create the new text in a Text Box, of course. But if I place my new text over the old text, the old text shows through the new text's clear background. Can the background color of a text box be changed from Clear to - say - white? That would make all of this very simple!

Right now, I must cover my old text with a white rectangle. But if I place my new Text Box over the white rectangle, the new Text box goes UNDER the white rectangle - and neither old nor new text is visible. Either a white text background or a Bring Forward button would make this editing very simple. Thanks.

Hi Capncavu,

The "bring forward" and "send backwards" buttons are available from the commands menu (under customize toolbars), or from the right click context menu, while you have an object selected.

As for overwriting text, I recommend you use the redact tool, it will allow you to highlight text and then remove it without a trace, you can choose a fill and border color if you need to mark where the words have been overwritten. just know that this method deletes the underlying content, and it cannot be retrieved.
the other way to accomplish this is to change the background of the typewriter tool, this can be done in the tool palette. (right click on the tool)
