Word DOC to PDF conversion - internal links

Post by zarkogajic »

Hi Support,

This is related to: https://forum.pdf-xchange.com/viewtopic.php?f=62&t=35499

With EU Editor and the SDK, the "PDF-XChange Lite" printer is used.

When a DOC is converted to PDF, any external links are converted to URI type links in the resulting PDF. That's great!

Any internal (to Word "bookmarks") links are ignored.

Could you please, pretty please: add/allow/enable conversion of internal "cross-reference" links (to Word style bookmarks) as GoTo type PDF links to SDK (/Lite printer)?

p.s.
I know this is possible with the "Standard Printer" and Word AddOn. I love how the Lite printer / SDK does the conversion, without the need to install more stuff, so having internal links also converted would be great.

Hello zarkogajic,

If you are using the Word to PDF conversion with the help of the Lite printer, then we have bad news - the external links won't be available either. Though you can try the XPS mode - then they should work.
We will also try to update the printer with the internal links in the XPS mode.

The same thing about the Word to PDF conversion that is being used in the Editor - we make the Word to save the XPS format and then we process it into the resulting PDF file.

Cheers,
Alex

Hi Alex,

Yes, I am using the "Lite" printer - the one that comes with SDK (and EU Editor).
the external links won't be available either.
But they are! (?). Only Word internal links (to Word style "bookmarks") are ignored.

Hello zarkogajic,

Are you sure that you are not using the XPS?

Alex,

I'm not sure of anything :)

I'm using "op.openDoc" - and the Word Doc gets converted to PDF and external links are preserved (internal ignored).

I do not know what happens behind the scenes :)

Well I wrote exactly about how this works in my previous post.

Hi Alex,

If I understand correctly what you said:
If you are using the Word to PDF conversion with the help of the Lite printer, then we have bad news - the external links won't be available either. Though you can try the XPS mode - then they should work.
This would mean I am using the XPS mode - as external links are converted.
Are you sure that you are not using the XPS?
But, the thing is: I am not setting it programmatically - therefore if XPS mode is used - I am not aware of this, nor I know how to "disable" or "enable" it.

The only thing I do, from code, is "op.openDoc" and DOC gets converted to PDF - I do not know what happens within your internal code.

So, for testing purposes: how do I "on"/"off" XPS mode?

Hello zarkogajic,

I don't think that can be tweaked. As I wrote before, we will try to update the printer with the internal links in the XPS mode, so that you will have a desired behavior.

Cheers,
Alex

A quick follow up, we have raised a formal ticket around this.

While for internal user only, referring to RT#5420: Update Driver for converting internal links in the XPS mode will facillitate any support team member looking up the status of this item.

Hi Support,

How do I get notified when "RT#5420" gets done and becomes a part of some future release?

Hello zarkogajic,

There are several ways - you can ask the support via mail. Or you look at the Version History of the newest version and see whether that RT was fixed.

Alex

Hi Support,

:)

9.1.355 does it!

Note: internal GOTO links are created with X,Y destination set to inherit - so only the page number is used.

If an internal link points to the bottom of some page - clicking the created link does not set the needed view: to the bottom of the page (due to Y: inherit), only sets the view to the page.
