Translation Tool Feature Request: Open files from Explorer

Post by BigMike »

Hi,

I've got a feature request for the translation tool:
Could you implement (or is there already) a way to open the translation files from explorer?
If I try to open a translation file with PDFXLocalizer.exe "Strings.de-DE.xcl" only an empty translation tool window will open.

At the moment, there are 24 separate translation files, which I have to check file by file for new strings (and afterwards look, if there are any new files to create by File -> New)
I have always to use File -> Open, navigate to the folder with the translations (as the localizer tool doesn't remember the last used folder) and open one translation after another.
If you could open the files by command line/explorer, I could select all translation files and open them side by side at once.

Hello BigMike,

Thank you for the feature request, I have created a ticket for you, and while I cannot guarantee a timeline, I have spoken with the Dev team and they will certainly look at the function. For now I was only able to request that it be a drag-and-drop operation, not a double click. But I am sure that will help!
RT#4580: Translation tool Drag and Drop from file explorer

As for your note about verifying afterwards, I know that frustration, as I have to check many of the translations that come in each update myself as well, As such I have created another feature request for a "verification function" to be implemented. The Idea for this one is to allow us to simply check a directory and see a report saying "all files 100%" or "these X files are incomplete (<100%)" so that we can quickly verify that all files are ready to go!
RT#4581: Translation tool, Verify all

Hi Daniel,

thank you very much. A "check all" function would be really great - this would simplify the translation process a lot.

Kind regards

Drag & Drop is fine in the new language tool; Verify all seems to be unfinished? At least, I can't select the folder with my translations...

Hi Mike,

Glad to hear drag and drop works - I am verifying with the people keeping track of tickets if we can close #4580 in our system now.
And I am asking for an update on 4581.

Regards,
Stefan

4 months later... I know, the Translation Tool has for sure not a top priority, but a working "verify all" would simplify my work...
At the moment, I've 26 single translation files, I need to check for changes - and then, I need to check if there were new modules added...

Hello BigMike!

Sorry for this, the "Verify All" function is in the works currently, and you can see it under "file > verify all" currently. Although it is not fully functional as of yet, and as such the directory it looks in is locked to E:\temp\languages.

For a quick view of the current layout see below:
image.png
In time, this will offer a percentage for each package, and offer a "filter by languages" function, so you can select to look only at the language you are translating.
You can already see that it gives a full list of every module and informs which are missing in a certain language.

Hopefully this will be done soon, but unfortunately yes, it is a lower priority than features and bugfixes in the main applications.

Thank you for the quick reply.
Yes, I saw this already, but since my translations are not in E:\Temp\Languages (drive E: is my disc drive), my list is empty...

But nice to know, that it's not forgotten...

No worries BigMike, even if your files were present there, the feature is incomplete, so it wouldn't be all that useful anyway.
I hope we can bring this around soon however (for both of us).

Hi,
can you share original english xcl files?
Sometimes it is necessary to search some expression in all files to maintain consistency. With the editor this is not possible.

Hi Logilink,

The originals should still be in the Translation Tools folders. If not, you can download a separate instance of the Translation Tools and use the *.xcl files from there.

Thanks,
If posting files to this forum, you must archive the files to a ZIP, RAR or 7z file or they will not be uploaded.
Thank you.

Do you mean it should be in the PDFXLocalizer Languages folder? They are not there.

Hello Logilink,

There are no .xcl files for English - as the strings for this are directly embedded int he code of our product (and is what the Editor defaults to if a given string is missing from a localized translation).

Stefan
