OCR module

Post by enaef »

Hi
Sorry for asking this question in this forum. I could not find a better one.
I saw advertisement for an OCR module on the tracker homepage and found this: "We are pleased to advise our developer toolkit clients that we have released the first fruits of our work on providing OCR functionality within our end user and developer toolkit products."

I am VERY interested in the OCR functionality, where it should be possible to "convert image based PDF files into fully searchable PDF’s files – whilst retaining the image based properties of the original file".

Since the first quote also speaks of end user products, I searched for this functionality in the "PRO PDF-XChange Product Suite" but could not find it.

Can anyone help me :?:

Thanks, Ernst

Hello Ernst,

Due to the curent design of our products it's quite complicated to integrate this OCR module into them, so it's planned to be included in ver3 of our Viewer. Then it will be available directly in our products.

For now I can not tell any specific details, but the OCR is producing quite good results, and ver3 of the end user Viewer is also almost ready - so it should not be long before you can test our OCR engine on your own.

Best,
Stefan

OCR was integrated in build 2.5.0200.0, available now via "Check for updates."

We're still waiting to see what Santa brings, but this is a nice surprise. :)

Users on the Serif forums are suitably impressed.

Hello,

these are really great news! :D
One question: What is the component name for the OCR module when installing via /COMPONENTS option? The help dialog does not list it yet.

Hi Ralf,

The component name for the OCR module when installing via /COMPONENTS option is PDFVOCR. I believe the language switch for it will be "PDFVOCR\eng", "PDFVOCR\fra", "PDFVOCR\deu" and "PDFVOCR\spa".

Hello,
I have the v2.5 PDFXChange Viewer, I updated it for the OCR module.
Is there a way to use the OCR thing on a file without opening PDFXChange Viewer? Or is there a .exe/.bat/or .else that I can use without using the PDFXChange Viewer?
Thank you in advance.

Hello Sphax,

I am afraid that the current OCR module we offer is only accessible through the Viewer itself, and is not intended for silent batch processing.

Ok I can understand this.
Do you know if this feature would be possible in the further versions?
Anyway, thank you for your fast answer. :)

I can not make any promises in this respect Sphax,

But we will do all we can to expand on the OCR functionality once ver3 of our Viewer is released.

Stefan
