Search tools not working properly?

Post by terrypin »

Perhaps it's something obvious I've missed, but after much study I don't see why searches like the one shown are getting zero hits?

EDIT: I meant to add that Acrobat 's search had no problem

Hello, terrypin

It could be that according to the order of the items in the content pane, this search is not actually in order. Is it possible for you to send us a copy of this document? If it contains information that you cannot share on a public forum, please email support@pdf-xchange.com with the document and a link to this post.

Kind regards,

Hi,

@terrypin: If you put the search term between double quotation marks, you will get a hit in the search results.

@Daniel: It looks like a file that can be downloaded from the following URL.

Hello, rakunavi

Thank you for finding this for us, I see the issue here as well, and will need to run some tests on this, as well as pass it along to the dev team and see what they think. I do also note that the search works if you perform it without any space characters between the letters. I wonder if perhaps one of the spaces in the chain is actually a byproduct of character spacing, instead of a physical character.

I will come back here tomorrow with my findings.

Thanks so much @rakanuvi, mystery solved!

I guess that in future, if I open a PDF in PDF-XChange Editor (currently my PDF-associated program), if I don't get any hits I'll run the search again with quotes. Or use 'Open with > Acrobat'.

Daniel,

Nothing special aboout the spaces. But they are essential for my search. Notepad finds strings like that OK.

Hope your programmers isolate the cause.

BTW, not sure how URLs are handled here? Seeing no specific tool. I entered mine as text. And oddly, the one from rakanuvi, despite being blue, does not respond to clicking.

Since the forum policy prohibits hyperlinks for users, each member tries to make it look like a URL, at least in appearance  , by changing colors, underlining, and so on. I prefer to show URLs in list style with blue text.

However, some user's posts have valid hyperlinks, as in the example below. I am also wondering how to embed hyperlinks.

Hello rakunavi, terrypin,

We can 'thank' bots for the prohibition of links for users.
Administrators like myself can create actual links, and if I edit the post of anyone else - their text also becomes actual clickable hyperlinks. You can see the links in terrypin's message two posts above are now active links after I just clicked to Edit his message out and then saved that without any further changes.

Hi Stefan,

I see, so it was by the power of God.
No wonder there is no way to do that at the user level.
A very trivial but very mysterious mystery has been solved.
Thank you for your comment.

Hello all,

not sure why this thread was put on "Solved".

Anyway, I noticed that when doing a search for that search term "7E FF 06 1A 00 00 01 FE E0 EF" minus the last character "F", I do get some search hits without problem:

Image

If however I use a lowercase "f" as the last character in the search term, then this lowercase "f" strangely is converted to an uppercase "F" when starting the search, and then no search results are found.

It seems to me that there might be a bug not in this document, but in PDF-XChange Editor's search feature here.

Thanks for looking into this,
David

Hello David.P,

The issue occurs when there is a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters (a number is considered lowercase so 5F is a 'mix'). This has already been brought to the attention of our devs and will be fixed for the next build.

Kind regards,
Stefan

If it helps, I've just tried my old version of PDFXCHANGE VIEWER (Version: 2.5 (Build 322.10)), which does not need the quotes to find known strings.

Also I suspect it could be relevant that those ten elements that I'm using as search targets came from a program (the Arduino IDE, running an .INO file) which can handle hex numbers. So 'FE' actually meant the hex representation of decimal 30 for example. However, by the stage I'm copy/pasting into PDF XChange Editor everything should be in plain text territory.

Hello, terrypin

You will be happy to hear that the Dev team got back to me overnight and confirmed that this issue is something that have already found and are working on a resolution for, which should be ready in time for the next release (365.0). In the meantime, I am sorry that I cannot offer a workaround beyond what it above.
For anyone curious, this is the ticket number for tracking the current search error:

RT#6253: Bug: Search not always reliable
