Adding "Carriage Returns" Adds Wide Spaces to Some Surrounding Lines

Post by shade-cabin-hammock »

Hi,

So, going through a long text that's been translated into English.

I can see where some paragraphs should exist, but they were not noticed in the translation.

I can click on

2022-01-28_22-18-46-419.png (17.84 KiB) Viewed 888 times
to get into the text to make the change.

Trouble is, seems like if I add a return, then I'll get

wide spacing of words

2022-01-28_22-14-55-698.png (6.31 KiB) Viewed 888 times
in the lines either above or below where I made the new paragraph.

I've learned that PDF is all about coordinate position.

For reading these files, it will REALLY be easier for me if I can get the paragraphs to exist where they should.

Among the many switches and features of PDF-X, is there anything I can click or select that will let me make small edits to the text without causing the spacing around the words to break loose when I click Edit Text?

Sincerely,

SCH

Hello shade-cabin-hammock,

Can you please share with us one such page - both before and after you make changes to it?
It will help us understand the problem better when we can see a sample!

Kind regards,
Stefan

Hi Stefan,

Will do. Gimme just a sec. While I'm at it I Googled a bit and got to

Text Alignment

and

Choose Left

This has been repairing things. But, as I make the example file, please a bit of insight: I've been selecting

Make Default

And...for that PAGE it seems to make the Text Alignment Left however...somehow that's not carrying over to other pages? Like...it needs to be set manually on every page / block of text? Any way to make the "Default" text Alignment > Left apply to the whole file?

Example file to come.

THANKS!

Hi Stefan,

Here's something similar in the file named

p58-well-capt-smollet-p-59-next-said-the-captain

at the lower third of the pages, near the words

Well, Captain Smollet

and

Next, said the captain

You can see the lines all get pushed way over to the right after a carriage return. (I added a few carriage returns on those pages. Some did that, some did not. But, two clearly did.)

The original file is here, too.

I'm GUESSING that the PDF rendering software may be culpable? Anything you can see to get around this?

I'd post the actual file but it's original research that's been shared with me and can't be put online yet. :P :/

Hello, shade-cabin-hammock

By any chance, are you using an older build of the software (or were you when you handled this translation)? I do recall there being a bug similar to this in the past, and in practice here, I cannot reproduce the issues here while trying to edit the text block on this end.

If possible, I may recommend that you reinstall the software, ensuring that you have the latest release available here installed: https://www.pdf-xchange.com/product/downloads

Hi Daniel,

Seems like I've got the latest build. I can re-install.

Do I need to uninstall first?

Thanks,

Hello, shade-cabin-hammock

Yes. to re-install the software, the first step would be to uninstall it. You should do this from the windows control panel directly, then restart the PC before running the installer again.

Hi Daniel,

I follow. Before I do, is there any processing routine I could run on my file here that would go through the whole file and re-render all the text as Left Justified? I've used Calibre to create lots of PDF files and I notice the justification seems to not follow any pattern - sometimes right, sometimes left, and a few others.

Among PDF-X's many processes, is there any one I can use to globally re-set the text to all be left-justified?

Re: Adding "Carriage Returns" Adds Wide Spaces to Some Surrounding Lines  SOLVED

Hello, shade-cabin-hammock

Hmm, yes there is one workaround option you have. First, select the "Edit > text" tool specifically:
image.png
Then, zoom as far out as possible and drag a selection area around the entire document (scroll down while holding the left mouse button so you can select the text on every page).
Then without clicking away from the text (so it all remains selected) open the "properties" pane (Ctrl_~), and change the alignment to center, and then back to left alignment.
**Important note: the software may freeze up for a moment while this is happening, since it is changing a very large amount of text all at once. Give it a moment to finish processing, and it should appear as desired.**

Ke BANG! POW And ZoooooooM! THAT WORKED!!! :D  :D  :D

I hasten to add...the file is 2,098 pages long!!!

Really, now...is there NOTHING that you guys haven't built in here? Crushed ice? Margarita dispenser?

REALLY GREAT!

THANK YOU!

Say! I guess I could apply OTHER text properties this way, too? Like first line indent, etc?

Hello, shade-cabin-hammock

If there is a margarita dispenser hiding in here, I haven't found it yet, but ill let you know when it comes along!

As for other properties, There are some limits to what can be done in bulk changes, but anything that exists in the properties pane when you have the text selected should be editable.

Hi Daniel,

Ha! Sounds good! :D :D

Ah! One follow up, please, if I could. The next document I've got to try this trick on is...4,000 pages long! I guess I can do it in 1000 page runs. But, is there any other means of grabbing all the pages short of click and drag?

Also, I know I can show two pages side by side. Is it possible to show more? So that, if click and drag is my only method, I could have perhaps four columns of pages across, or more?

Hello, shade-cabin-hammock

Although there is an easier way to "select" all the text in the document (using the right click > select > all text" function) this selects the text as the separate objects that they are, instead of selecting it as "blocks" (block selection is required to make changes to things like alignment). It will be inconvenient, but keeping in mind the delay that was seen on a smaller document when making a change like this, it is something best done in smaller batches. Typically, bulk editing like this should not be required, it is quite odd for the alignment to be changed at random, and incorrectly like you have seen here today.

As for viewing more pages at once, unfortunately no, there is no option to view more than 2 pages side by side currently, so that will be the limit of what you can get away with.
