Feature Request: Close-File Option

Post by PHK »

Some functions cannot be executed immediately if they involve open document files. Example: print to file where the function will not proceed if the target file is open.

What would be nice would be if there were an option to automatically close open destination files (with or without saving the file) without interrupting the flow of the function being executed. Best would be if this were a default preference option, but failing that if it were an election somewhere in the individual function execution.

Thank you in advance for consideration of this suggestion.
All best,

Hi PHK - thanks fr the suggestion.

What would yo propose we do when that document has had changes made to it? I assume that a "Do you want to save the changes before closing?" might work, but what if the state of that document is not in mind? Now I am forced to make a decision that I may lose data. Maybe you don't leave documents open a long time, I do (and probably shouldn't) and I am not always mindful of my most recent changes and whether I want to keep them.

Then there is the issue of the target file being opened in other applications. We could do nothing about that.

I don't mean to be negative, just playing the Devil's Advocate here.

:-)
Best regards

No problem with the pushback; not negative, constructive.

Well, first of all, I am pretty good, but not perfect, about frequently saving files but I recognize that may not be universal. I am hitting "Save All" dozens of times all day. As I sync everything to the Cloud as I work, I know that I can always revert to an older version that I may not have wanted saved (almost never happens) by going back to the Versions history in the Cloud. That is better than losing new file updates by not saving.

But, having said that, there are no such things as "always" and "never." I find it self-iritating when I have a destination file that I'm working on but haven't saved and I want to add something via the print-to-file function, say like a print screen or print internet page and the flow gets interrupted by the pop-up reminder. Don't you?

Yes, I would want a "do you want to save?" option if the open file has unsaved content. If "Yes", then a secondary option of "Save Now and proceed" or if "No" go to the popup that you get now or something similar. As I said above, a Preference univeral option would be ideal.

I am not sure I get the line of thought about the destination file being open in other applications. As I "never" encounter that situation, I cannot relate. I only open PDF files in PDF-XCE. But surely some safety valve on that could be created.

I hope this answers your question and fleshes out my suggestion.

...or, better yet, implement my suggestion of having an Auto-Save option which would render this Feature Request moot.

Hi PHK,

I spoke to the ream about this and the feeling is that what you need here will be possible when we implement "non-blocking" when opening PDF files. It is not trivial to do and there are many higher priorities I am told.

The upshot of the discussion is that you will get the functionality you want but it is not going to happen right away.
