After deleting named destinations, you can't run "Convert to Named Destinations" again.

Post by rakunavi »

Hello all,

If you delete named destinations after running "Convert to Named Destinations" of the Bookmarks Tab, you will get the following error when you run "Convert to Named Destinations" again.

"No changes were made. Please check your input data and try again."

The reproduction procedure is as follows.

  1. Generate a new PDF file. The number of pages and size do not matter.
  2. Run "Bookmark Every Nth Page" of the Bookmarks Tab to generate bookmarks. The template does not matter, but for example, set "Page %[Page]".
  3. Run "Convert to Named Destinations" of the Bookmarks Tab. The pattern does not matter, but for example, set "%[Title]".
  4. Delete all generated named destinations.
  5. Run "Convert to Named Destinations" again.
The situation should be the same between "after step 4" and "after step 2", and it seems natural to be able to run "Convert to Named Destination" again. However, it fails.

Hoping that the above information will be of some help to you.

Thank you,
rakunavi

Re: After deleting named destinations, you can't run "Convert to Named Destinations" again.  SOLVED

Hello rakunavi,

When you convert the bookmarks from pointing to specific pages to being linked with named destinations - those bookmarks now only know they are pointing to "named destination xyz". When you delete the named destinations - the bookmarks now have nothing to point to, so when you try to convert those same bookmarks to new named destinations - there's nothing to convert.

So you should consider the conversion to named destination a permanent operation that is not easily reversible, and only use it when you are sure you want it and do not expect to need to re-run the same in the future on the same bookmarks.

Kind regards,
Stefan

Hi Stefan,

Thank you for explaining in detail. I wasn't aware that the bookmark destinations were being translated because I was only interested in the Named Destinations pane. Thanks to you, I was able to deeply understand the function of "Convert to Named Destinations".

By adding the step to apply "Convert Named Destinations to Regular Destinations" as shown below, I confirmed that the error mentioned in the above post does not occur.

  1. Run "Bookmark Every Nth Page"
  2. Run "Convert to Named Destinations"
  3. Run "Convert Named Destinations to Regular Destinations"
  4. Delete all named destinations
  5. Return to the state of Step 1
Best Regards,
rakunavi
