Search - Advanced Criteria Options

Post by glauco.cangane »

Dear colleagues,

I am trying to use Advanced Criteria on Search Options with more than one sentence on "all of these words" field on find text with. For example I can have a set of sentences
"type of mouse"
"monitoring system"
"air core"

1. How to search in PDF-XChange Editor for these 3 sentences above at once? How to search more than one sentence as above at once?

Due to huge documents with hundreds of pages our company needs to search a set of sentences at once, so after that, we will highlight, save etc.

2. If we don´t have this possibility or feature, is there any other way to do this?
We have licensed all tools from you.

Thank you very much,
Glauco Cangane

Hi Glauco,

thanks for the post and welcome to the Tracker Forums.

I see the challenge here. I can search accurately for a phrase, but I cannot search for "phrase A OR phrase B OR "phrase C" which is, I think, what you are wanting?

I am forced to do three searches.

Now this does open a bit of a can of worms regards the boolean... Is it your intention to search for documents that have any or all of the phrases? So do you want to find documents that have "phrase 1 AND phrase 2" for example or either as in "phrase 1 OR phrase2"?

This then gets further complicated when you have 3 or more phrases.

I am trying to better understand what your need it here so that I can have the appropriate discussion with the dev team to see if this is possible.

regards
Best regards

Hi Paul,

Yes, search for "phrase A OR phrase B OR phrase C" is exactly what we are wanting without the need to do three searches.

We have technical specifications of the customers with more than 200 hundreds pages and with this functionality I already get marked or highlighted the most important sentences to make our designs and engineering. Maybe a simple file (txt, csv or any other) with simple phrases or any better and fast idea your DEV Team can have. Search for any of the phrases OR not AND.

If this be possible we save USD millions per year on Engineering efforts.

Please let us know if we have any possibility or any more details you may need from my side.

My Kindest Regards,

Thanks for that Glauco

I've passed the request on to the dev team. Let's see what they come back with.

Hi again Glauco,

Good news. It appears this can already be done.

What I learned today is that these three advanced search criteria fields each represent a boolean.
  • all of these words is AND
  • any of these words is OR
  • none of these words is NOT
so if you use quotation marks for each phrase in the "any of these words" fields it becomes "phrase A" OR "phrase B" OR "phrase C". If you look to the search options and set the "Proximity" to "Words from the same document" you should get results that include one or more of the phrases in a document. You can then set a folder to search. I searched a network share and it did exactly what I think you want.
image.png
One should actually be able to combine the logic of these operators (somewhat). Adding full boolean options between search phrases is a huge task I am told.

I am keen to hear if this gives you what you are looking for.

Paul

Hi Paul,

Yes, it´ is a very good news. It is what we were expecting and looking for.

My only remaining questions are regarding to licenses.

1. How can I check the amount of licenses for my organization?
2. I would like to know if there are limitations since we would like to use this functionality in engineering from different manufacturing plants. How can I check that?

We were ABB (Asea Brown Boveri) company name, now we are Hitachi Energy since last October.

Hello, glauco.cangane

You will find a list of your licenses by signing into the account which they are assigned to. If you need more details than that, I will need to ask you to email sales@pdf-xchange.com so that they can help you go over all those items. Account and license details for a company are not something we go over on the public forums.

Where these advanced searches are stored?
image.png
I mean, I would like to save a lot of advanced criteria searches for more than my machine, for whole engineering department. Is there any way to do this? Get saved advanced criteria and share with others. It would be very helpful instead of each user must make by your own.

Let me know if there are possibilities.

Hello, glauco.cangane

These settings are included in an "export" of the Editor settings. To mograte these options, click "File > manage settings > export settings" Then from the menu that appears, ensure that "program options > common" is enabled.
Anyone else who imports that settings file will then have your saved "search criteria" included in their editor.

Hello,

Is it possible to merge saved "search criteria" from one user with saved "search criteria" from another user?

Thank you,

Another question: search, find and advanced search works when a document is protected?

Hello, glauco.cangane

It is not possible to merge saved search criteria, you would simply have two separate searches in that case.
As for search functions in protected documents, yes, in most cases the search/find functions themselves will work, but the annotation function within the search pane often will not.

I'll use this thread so as not to create a new one :D .

Where can I find the advanced search tutorial, what are the options/capabilities, etc.?

Below I will describe my need based on the table below:

image.png

I need to select e.g. B11-B14 at the same time, I tried to enter B1* or B1? in the search field. Unfortunately, it didn't work.

In the next search, I want to find a text containing 100, I type *100* and unfortunately it does not find anything either.

Are there any ways to get my needs?

Hello KoLoLoLo,

Could you please tell me what version is your PDF Editor?

You can see this information in the PDF Editor's Help -> About menu.

Also, could you please send me one of the files you are having this issue with?

Regards.

@Dimitar - Tracker Supp

I updated yesterday to the latest 9.5 365.0.

By the way, I will ask if there are any help in other languages or only in ENG?

Hi,

1) More info about Search can be found in the online manual (only available in English):
https://help.pdf-xchange.com/pdfxe9/search_ed_2.html

2) For as far as I know, wildcard characters can not be used

3) The Search function does not seem to work correctly anymore in the current build 365.0
See: https://forum.pdf-xchange.com/viewtopic.php?t=39607

Are you working on adding this functionality?
Many programs have a search option where "*" replaces any string and "?" any character.

Hi KoLoLoLo

2) That is rather a question for @Tracker Support.

I am just an ordinary "user" as you are, no ties with Tracker Software, trying to help.

@Tracker Software

It would be nice if we have a regex search ....

Hello everyone,

I can confirm that in the latest build, advanced search has a bug that is causing it to not return any results under certain conditions.

This issue will be resolved in our next build, which will be released before the end of the year.

Regarding wildcards, I will forward this request to our developers for consideration.

#6325: FR: Adding the ability to use wildcard characters in the search tool

Hello Dimitar!

What about adding regex search as you added in other places?
