PDF-XChange in Flatpak?

Post by Terrixy »

Hi,

I've been a satisfied PDF-XChange Pro user for years, and recently moved my main rig to Linux. While the editor runs mostly ok on wine, I don't quite like the non-contained nature of wine. I understand there is not much incentive for Tracker software to develop a native version for Linux. However, is there any chance to pack the portable version together with needed wine libraries into a Flatpak (like winepak) or snap package? I'm fine with less frequent release than the main channel.

Many thanks!

Hello Terrixy,
Thanks for your suggestion.
Some time ago we considered releasing a Linux version of the Editor (linked with winelib).
However by that time Wine team was actively implementing and improving Windows API the Editor uses, so we decided that locking the Editor to a fixed version of Wine was not a good idea.

We will revise this question again based on the current state of Wine.

Many thanks Roman and team! That's great news! Many Linux distros nowadays have become easy enough for novice users, but they still lack a high quality PDF editor in my opinion. A self-contained PDF-XChange editor would be perfect to fill the gap.

Thanks and keep up the good work!

that is really good news. Since many years we're using many licences of the Windows version of PDF-XChange Editor and are very happy with it - thanks for the good work. But we would really like to use this great software on our Linux clients too.

So checking again if releasing a Linux version of the Editor is possible would be highly appreciated. :-)

Thanks and kind regards,
Markus

Hello, u880

It has only been a month and a half since we last spoke of this, but unfortunately, the answer is still a tentative "not yet". I expect it will be quite a while before we see any further news on this.

Hello, u880

I am afraid that the task has been postponed as low priority, Linux users who wish to make use of the Editor can do so with one of the handful of windows emulators (forgive me WINE community, I know "WINE Is Not an Emulator", its just a catch all term) that are available to each distribution. That said, this is unlikely to allow for automatic updates as you mentioned wanting, for now, that will need to be a manual process.

Our software is still first and foremost developed for the windows environment, so priorities will often fall on resolving issues with windows before we consider the other avenues. It is also worth noting that even when we have this available, our support team is still (and will likely remain) largely Windows based, and most of us do not have a great deal of experience with Linux systems. If you encounter an issue using the software on Linux, we may ask that you try to reproduce it in a windows environment so we can troubleshoot.

Hello Daniel,

thank your for the update and the information.

So my conclusion is, that in the foreseeable future there will be no Linux version of PDF-Xchange, that's a real pity.
I'll try to get the Windows version working with WINE or have to generally look for another vendor/product - let's see. And BTW: automatic updates is not what I want, maybe there was another user mentioned it.

Thanks again and kind regards

Hello, u880

That conclusion is unfortunately correct, Hopefully something can come later down the road, but it is not a priority at this junction. As for the mention of automatic updates, my apologies, I have quite a few cases stored up in this head of mine at any given moment, and sometimes similar ones get muddled together, I must have pulled that request from another recent topic.
