Order of Field Export

Post by smccrary@rosemccrary.com »

Greetings,
First time posting, I hope this act is appropriate.

I am exporting form data from PDF-XChange Editor Plus (v.9.2 build 358.0, with enhanced OCR) to Excel.

The resulting file
(A) contains the fields in an undesirable and (mostly) indescribable order (maybe the order of creation?); and
(B) is missing most of the fields, i.e. they are not being exported.

Any way I want to change and set that order.
And have all the field exported.

How is this possible please?

Attached is example export.
In that file I only partially list the reorder that I prefer.
And I did not list all of the missing fields.

Thank you,
SWM

Hello smccrary@rosemccrary.com,

Welcome to our forums!
Yes - the fields are exported in the order in which they were created in the file, and there's no way to change this order I am afraid.

Can you please share an original PDF file with fields that you are unable to export and the resulting export file that you get so that we can run some tests with those?

Kind regards,
Stefan

Hello Stefan,
Thank you for the response.

Well that feature (field order during export) makes it very difficult to export, combine (from different forms), and share that data in Excel or a database, or is that a different function? I may be missing something, but isn't that an important feature for using Form data?

I am happy to send a file, but upon closer inspection, it appears that only fields with data are exported. Is that correct? If so, then it is working as you expect, but I would expect there of be a way for all the fields to export. Again, it would seem to be an important feature for exporting data.

I am not trying to be difficult here, sorry if it seems to be. I've used the form creating and sharing feature in other PDF editor's (without naming names). In those products, when a form is shared, the data coming back to the distributor is typically combined into a single file. That is what I expected here, but I am not trying to lay my expectations upon you. Is it possible that I am trying to combine various completed forms (into a single Excel file) using the wrong feature?

ciao

Hello, smccrary@rosemccrary.com

Although the Editor cannot do this yet, our PDF-Tools batch processing application may have a solution to your problem. It is able to export form data as a CSV from multiple files. This will find all the shared fields, and keep each value on a separate line per document below that. This way, you could process all the documents you need at once, and export the content into a single shared format.

Regarding the Editor's ability to export to CSV, I have spoken with the Dev team, and they are looking into the ability to change the export order, but at the moment we cannot make any promises that it can be changed.

Greetings again,
Thank you for the information.

It is good to know that this capability is available in PDF-Tools.
But, I find that I do not have a license to use PDF-Tools..Is that correct?

I do have an old version of another PDF editor that I can use to do this.

Best regards.
steven

PS..BTW your screen capture snippet is barely readable on my screen, is that the resolution of the image, or my screen?

Hello, smccrary@rosemccrary.com

I cannot discuss account details on the forums but you can check here to see what your license type is and upgrade it if necessary: https://www.pdf-xchange.com/login

Regarding my screenshot, It is in full resolution, and I have windows scaling set to 100%, so it should be perfectly legible. If you ever see an image on our forums that you want to view in full size, simply click on it, and a lightbox should open to show it larger than the chat column allows.

Understand the licensing, and thank you.

I thought I tried clicking on the image, but I tried again and it works, so maybe not.
Again thanks.
