18 GB memory consumption for PDF-XChange Editor?
Since my computer showed a strangely slow reaction just now, I took a look at Process Explorer and was somewhat shocked.
For once, I haven't even done much with PDF-XChange Editor today. While I have some files with a total of ~5000 pages open, I have not yet displayed many of these pages today, thus transferring them to the page image cache.
While I have searched for text through most of these files, I believe this should not occupy such huge amounts of RAM cache.

How much memory do you have in your system?

Re: 18 GB memory consumption for PDF-XChange Editor?
Hi Ivan, I have 32GB RAM.
Interestingly, the slowness of the system did not subside after I closed PDF-XChange Editor, but only after I also restarted Google Chrome.

Re: 18 GB memory consumption for PDF-XChange Editor?
Here I have recorded the memory usage with a document of 4700 pages.
Although it is probably not quite comparable, an earlier version of PDF-XChange Editor seems to have used less memory at first glance:
https://forum.pdf-xchange.com/viewtopic.php?f=62&t=29413&hilit=gb+ram#p115519
I was about to try the same procedure with the (portable) previous version 9.1.356.0 of PDF-XChange Editor, by exporting the settings from the current (installed) version 9.2.357.0 and importing them into the portable (previous) version, and then following the same steps as above.
However, the portable version does not seem to cache the thumbnails and pages once displayed, despite having the same settings, even in the "Performance" section. Therefore, I could not perform the test run with the portable (previous) version 9.1.356.0.
I routinely work with PDF files of this size all day long, and have never had the problem of such high memory usage, even to the point of crashing somewhere above 20 GB.
These are my performance settings, which I have been using for a long time like this:
Another related thread is here:
https://forum.pdf-xchange.com/viewtopic.php?f=62&t=29413&hilit=gb&start=50#p131224
- 77 MB after opening PDF-XChange Editor
- 164 MB after opening the file [1]
- 2.1 GB after searching the file for text [2]
- 7 GB after loading all thumbnails into RAM cache (albeit in small size) [3]
- 20 GB after loading 673 of the 4700 pages into RAM cache (on 4k monitor) [4]

Re: 18 GB memory consumption for PDF-XChange Editor?
Hello, David.P
Thank you for confirming. To begin I note that you said you are currently using build 357, though I expect it will be the same, I do need to ask you to confirm if you can reproduce the issue in the latest release (9.2.358.0).
Your earlier mention of a possible relation to Google Chrome reminded me that the 358 release did have a few minor changes to our browser extensions, so it is possible that something has changed that could impact this in some way, and so updating is doubly important for this case.
Kind regards,

Here is the same with the latest version 9.2.358.0:
- 120 MB after opening PDF-XChange Editor
- 226 MB after opening the file
- 2.0 GB after searching the file for text
- 7 GB after loading all thumbnails into RAM cache (albeit in small size)
- 20.5 GB after loading 673 of the 4700 pages into RAM cache (on 4k monitor)

Re: 18 GB memory consumption for PDF-XChange Editor?
As I see, you are allowed to use up to 75% of your memory (24GB of your 32GB) and never clean it up (lifespan set to Maximum).
So, where's the problem?

Re: 18 GB memory consumption for PDF-XChange Editor?
Yes Ivan that is correct. However as I wrote:
In comparison to an earlier version, where I experienced this:
Particularly, I've never had to stop scrolling at a point a few hundred pages deep into my document because memory was way over 20 GB already, as has happened today.
In comparison to an earlier version, where I experienced this:
I shall report whether I see this happening more often with the latest PXE version.

We will check which changes may cause that and will try to mitigate the issue where it is possible.

Re: 18 GB memory consumption for PDF-XChange Editor?
And here is the same run with version 9.1 build 356.
However, the process and the resulting figures are almost the same as when carrying out the test with the latest version 9.2 build 358 (see above).
- 120 MB after opening PDF-XChange Editor
- 253 MB after opening the file
- 1.7 GB after searching the file for text
- 6.5 GB after loading all thumbnails into RAM cache (albeit in small thumbnail size)
- 19.4 GB after loading 673 of the 4700 pages into RAM cache (on 4k monitor)
However, the process and the resulting figures are almost the same as when carrying out the test with the latest version 9.2 build 358 (see above).

Re: 18 GB memory consumption for PDF-XChange Editor?
Thanks Paul -- perhaps the observations are indeed normal, and nothing significant has changed with memory consumption after all. I shall occasionally run the same test with a considerably older version of PDF-XChange Editor and report back here, to see if memory consumption has indeed increased significantly.
