Bug: Copy/Paste and Cut/Paste of Text Boxes Not Working Correctly

Hi PDF-XChange Reps,

I've run into a problem trying to copy and paste or cut and paste text boxes. It does not correctly copy/cut the content (when I cut the box it does not disappear). When I go to paste the content, most of the time it only gives me the option to paste it as plain text and not as content.

I created a test file and video to illustrate the problem.

Update 12 Oct 2021:
I tried copy/pasting and cutting/pasting again today using the document I linked in the post. One time everything worked okay (copied/cut the text box and correctly pasted it as content). The other three times I tried it, something did not work. Either it would not cut the text box or it would always paste it as plain text.

I have spent the better part of the last hour trying to reproduce your issues here, but cannot seem to do so. Cutting the object always seems to remove the original item immediately. The only possible cause of this I could see is overlapping content. Is it possible that in testing, you copied this and pasted multiple times accidentally, resulting in multiple instances of the same text, in the exact same coordinates, to allow for this to happen?

As for the issue with pasting content, I know we had a problem with this in a previous build, and I did see in your video that you are running the latest release. Perhaps in updating, something that should have been overwritten was not, and this is a remnant of old settings. To test that theory, please try resetting all settings (File > manage settings > reset settings), and then test this again, to see if it is still reproducible.

No. I have been using the file I uploaded for testing ... meaning I literally downloaded the one in my post to use for testing just to make sure I am using the same file you are. As you can see in the file, there are not multiple instances of the same text.

I reset settings and even uninstalled and reinstalled the program. The problem is still there after reinstalling with default settings but it's much harder to get it to manifest. I have to copy/paste and cut/paste the text box like I did in the video many, many times (probably for 20 minutes) only to have the problem manifest itself a few times towards the end. It seems to happen much more often with my settings (I'm willing to share them if you want).

In your video (sec. 26 - 27) I hear you saying that you are (already) working with Windows 11.

Myself I (still) have Windows 10 Home 32-bit (20H2) and I am not immediately able to reproduce the problem you describe.

I wonder if you still have an other computer with Windows 10 and PDF-XChange Editor build 356.0, and if so, if you can reproduce the problem on that device ? Maybe verify/compare your Windows clipboard settings ? "Clipboard history" and "Sync across devices" are turned off at my side.

I've been trying to find a better way to reproduce the problem (besides 20 minutes of copy/paste and cut/paste as fast as possible). However, it has proven difficult.

At the same time, when I am working on the documents I care about, the problem is glaringly apparent. In that situation, it correctly copies and pastes about 25% of the time (like my original video). It's very frustrating.

Willy, with regard to your suggestion, I do not have a Windows 10 computer any longer.

1) Did you verify the Windows Clipboard Settings ?

2) Maybe uninstall, followed by reinstall using the MSI-package ?

My Windows clipboard settings are set to automatically sync text I copy to supported devices. I'm not sure where you are going with this, however. I'm only using PDF-XChange on one computer.

I did this as I mentioned above. However, the issue still persists. It seems to be especially a problem when I am working on this one current project and have 6-7 files open across two windows. I wish I could share the documents I'm working on, but that isn't an option.

1) The options you have in case of copy/paste, depend of the Windows Clipboard. So I wonder if turning off its options for the "clipboard history" and/or "sync across devices" would change something to the mal behavior you are experiencing sometimes.

2) The question about uninstall/reinstall was to be sure to use the "MSI"-installer, instead of the ZIP/EXE-installer.
I guess you did.

I managed to get my hands on windows 11 for a long bout of testing today, after a mind numbing 2 hours of attempting to reproduce this with repeated copy/paste actions, 1 hour each with the "sync clipboard" function disabled, and then enabled, I have still be completely unable to reproduce the issue.

At this point I have to ask, to you have ANY third party application which can, could, or may in any way shape or form, have even the slightest impact on the clipbaord? A few quick examples of such apps (off the top of my head) are TotalCommander, XYplorer, and ClipClip. Is it possible you have something akin to one of these installed and running on your PC, which could impact how applications like ours are able to interact with the clipboard?

I appreciate you putting so much time into this. I do not have any apps that impact the clipboard like those you mentioned. However, there was a time when it seemed the problem was exacerbated by having Microsoft 365 apps open (Word, Excel, and Outlook). I tested that hypothesis and it didn't really pan out.

As soon as I have time, I will create some additional test files I can share that more easily reproduce the issue. My current working theory is that the problem is exacerbated by one or all the following: (i) my settings, (ii) opening multiple files (5-8) with lots of text boxes and other objects, and (iii) opening in the files in separate Windows. One thing I have noticed is that the problem seems especially present when copy/pasting or cut/pasting a mixture of text boxes and other objects (sometimes I have to try cutting them 8-10 times before it takes).

As soon as I can reproduce the issue more reliably with files I can share, I will update this post. I would especially l ike to find a way to easily reproduce the issue with default settings, but I'll see if that works.

The video is great; clear ands step by step, unfortunately, like Daniel I am unable to reproduce the issue with the limited testing I did.

We are going to keep trying.

I am interested, if you use the "Select Text" tool, rather than the "Edit Text" Tool, for the copy operation, do you see the same problem?

I am interested, if you use the "Select Text" tool, rather than the "Edit Text" Tool, for the copy operation, do you see the same problem?
I tried this using both "copy" and "copy as rich text" and the problem did not manifest itself meaning it always gave me the correct paste options (paste as plain text for copy and paste as plain text or rich text for copy as rich text).

I did some additional research and this is what I found.
1. The problem did not occur when I booted into safe mode.
2. The problem did not occur when I tried it on another computer (other computer is on same version of Windows 11, same M365 apps open). The other computer uses an older Intel processor while the one with the problem has an Ryzen 9 5900x.
3. A new problem occurred when I was doing some additional testing. Many times clicking "copy" did not give me any paste options (there was literally nothing to paste). This happened more times today than the other problems I documented above. I have not seen this before.
4. I'm getting the impression that this problem is specific to my computer/hardware/etc. The strange thing, however, is that I have not noticed any clipboard problems with any other programs (and, in fact, there are no problems with the select text functionality of PDF-XChange).

I don't know if PDF-XChange creates a support file or if there is software that can be used to create something such as that, but I'd be wiling to give it a shot. Otherwise, I'm out of ideas.

Would you be willing to have a remote session with one of our Development team members, using a debug version of the Editor, to try and reproduce this issue? This would involve us remotely connecting to your PC and taking control of it, you would still be able to control the PC, and view everything that we are doing. Thank you for helping us with this. For anyone else who is experiencing this issue, we have now managed to reproduce the issue locally, and are working on a resolution. It appears to primarily be caused by certain hardware accessories, such as a Video card "listening" to the clipboard, and preventing us from moving the content to said clipboard. In one of the upcoming builds (either build 359 or 360) we should have a solution in place to negate this problem.
