Can't save or open this small file, and takes 3 GB or more of RAM SOLVED

I successfully saved it once somehow, probably by waiting for more time, but later when I open it it causes bug to appear, freezes and RAM usage increases to few GB. The same happens in this untouched file if I try to save it as PDF (save or save as).
SumatraPDF can open buggy saved file properly tough. Here is link to original file which can be open by app but can't be saved, or can but takes few GB RAM. PDF-XChange Editor Plus 8.0 Build 343.0 (Nov 18 2020). Windows 10 21H1. 8 GB RAM.
What could be the cause? Is there any way to save file? Reason I wanna save it is because I made bookmarks, now until you solve this problem I exported bookmark file so I can import later. But even when I do not touch bookmarks, but just save file, issue is same.

Even Adobe Acrobat increases RAM usage to over GB just bit slower than your app. As soon as I click bookmarks just to see them, Adobe Acrobat freezes. How can such small simple file damage even the best apps? Is there any way to fix that file, regenerate it maybe?

Same experience here with PDF-XChange Editor, latest build 9.1.356.

No idea about the reason.

Optimized PDF (could only be saved after several minutes) still has the same problem.

Done some more investigation. It actually can be saved, but very slowly, about 5-10 minutes, and causes RAM to increase to about 4 GB then drops back to normal during saving. However newly saved file, although it has same file size, opens much slower in any app like SumatraPDF and takes almost 1 GB. Normal file (original, without being re saved by your app) when opened in SumatraPDF or any other viewer takes only few MB and opens quickly.

Now I figured exactly what could be wrong. When I open save as optimized PDF dialog box, and click on Font, it freezes and same bug. So it could be something with font. This time it never ends, but tries to find font forever. Saving as txt is without problems. So I will try to convert it to some other format and back to fix this file.

Same issue in Adobe Acrobat last version. Unfortunately Preflight option in Save as A/PDF or X/PDF option reports it did not find any issues.

This document has bloated document logical structure (StructTreeRoot dictionary, ParentTree subdictionary). It contains millions of null objects, which must be processed during save, thus saving taking some time. On my PC it takes about 15 seconds only, but it may vary depending on processor, ram speed and capacity and of course SSD/HDD. Can you describe your configuration?

For now we have no proper workaround how to fix this file. Removing all tags and bookmarks fix this issue(and reduce file size, of course), so if this information is not required removing tags and bookmarks may be temporary workaround.

Regarding to SumatraPDF or any other readers - well, it is their problems how do they read PDF documents. Editor open both original ad resaved document fast enough (again, on my fast PC), but also use more memory when opening resaved document.

I don't need bookmarks, I may add new later if document gets fixed.
I successfully exported document to PNG images. I may try to recreate PDF from images, maybe with OCR processing later.
I did not mean completely slow, but just slower like 10 times opening of saved vs original document.
If I save document as pdf (sanitized documents) then file size is 221 MB.
If I save document as pdf (pdf/a, pdf/x, normal) file sizes are 8-10 MB, but almost GB RAM usage and slower opening.
Exporting to word document (docx) size is 5 MB and to txt 2 MB.

You need to open Tags pane and simply delete all elements from there.

Wow, thanks! Solved all my problems. Did not know that tags are the culprit. Never heard of PDF tags before, and after removing them, saving, reading, editing is ultra fast. Actually used Adobe Acrobat while I was still downloading your app version 9, could not wait, but it performs the same function. Also added my self-made bookmarks from exported bookmarks file, and no problems. Solved!
