Unauthorized alteration of this protected document has been detected!

Post by kt »

Hello,

This is a bug report for a problem that occurs when "Check for unauthorized protected-document alterations" is selected in the security tab.

When I insert a document into a password-protected document using a different PDF app (Nuance PDF Viewer Plus SE), and then I try to open it in PDF-Xchange Editor, a notification appears near the top of the page that displays the message, "Unauthorized alteration of this protected document has been detected!" Selecting either of the available options in the adjacent pull-down menu ("Trust the document one time only." "Trust this document always.") opens another windows with the message, "The document will be closed and re-opened automatically to apply your choice. Do you want to continue?" However, clicking"Yes" does nothing at all.

If I go to PDF-Xchange Editor preferences and uncheck "Check for unauthorized protected-document alterations," then this problem does not occur. In PDF-Xchange Viewer, this option ("Check for unauthorized..." does not exist, and the above problem does not occur--the document opens just fine. Thus, this problem is specific to the option (Check for unauthorized protected-document alterations" in Editor. In either Editor or Viewer, making an edit (e.g. underline) to the pdf file prevents this error message from re-appearing when the file is opened again in PDF-Xchange Editor with "Check for unauthorized protected-document alterations" switched on.

By the way, what kind of unauthorized alterations are supposed to get flagged, here? Ideally, simply combining PDFs in another app would not trigger this warning.

I have attached a copy of a pdf that triggers this problem. The password is: 1

Thank you.

Hi KT,

thanks for the report. Indeed there is a bug that we are investigating now, that "Trust this Document" pair of options is not sticking. We will fix this.

Regards the message and why we do it, even though the changes that were made are within the ISO PDF specifications we give the warning because it is possible that certain changes that are within the specs can be a potential security risk. You can turn that off in the preferences if you prefer:

meanwhile we are investigating the button actions.

thanks for bringing this to our attention kt.
Best regards
