Some problem roaming profiles

Post by omoyano »

Hi everyone!

I recently installed PDF-Xchange Editor in my rds user environment and I have some issues:

- I configured the licence key . The end user need only to "activate" it. But the message to activate come back again randomly
So...my question. There are some way to activate the program with gpo? regedit? user profile ?etc...

EDIT: I'll test https://www.pdf-xchange.com/knowledgebase/558-How-do-I-silently-activate-keys

- The end user lost pdf-xchange as default pdf application. When firt execution I have the pop-up and select "YES"
Image
But after relaunch session the pop-up come back

So...I thinks it's a problem with user profile roaming? How I can save the configuration? Or force for GPO, regedit...

Thanks a lot for your reply

Hi, omoyano

The Steps in the article you found should resolve this issue. There is a problem with activations on roaming profiles, as the activation is recoded in the users registry, and connects the current account with the unique machine identifier (usually for the server, not the device) of course this is lost when the user account is recreated in a roaming environment.

Hi omoyano,

you can indeed create a Group Policy to enforce file associations, and it can be applied to PDFs. Please take a look at this KB, it shows a generic approach to enforcing file associations and applies it to PDFs and our Editor: https://help.pdf-xchange.com/sysad ... olicy.html

I hope that helps.

Hi Paul!

Thanks for your reply.

My issue is that when I apply the group policy:

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System

It's change default pdf association for everyone and I need to do it only from some users.

I try too with Editor: PDFXEdit.exe /fileassoc:user=no // sets association for PDF files by file extenstion .pdf but same problem because that modify:

•user=no - then file associations will be placed in HKEY_ LOCAL_MACHINE.

•user=yes - then file associations will be placed in HKEY_CURRENT_USER and HKEY_ LOCAL_MACHINE.

What regedit key this command modify?

I'll continue to search.....

On further discussion with the development team leader, I have learned that setting the file association per user is a convoluted and complex task that requires calculations based on user seeds. The result is that there is not a specific set of reg keys we can tell you are responsible, each user can get a different key set.

I am afraid this is a generic issue for Microsoft, it is not specific to the PDF format or it's associations. Microsoft have gone to great lengths to make it difficult to set per user preferences without user interaction. Even getting the Editor to set itself as default on first run, where there is an option for all users or "just me" required some difficult work investigating and reverse engineering what they are doing.

I am afraid I cannot give you a simple mechanism to achieve this. Again, because this is generic to any file association, if you do find a way to achieve this I myself would personally be keen to hear.
