Strange behaviour of PDFXPrinter and not removing unused font (subset)

Post by Christian Flatscher »

Hi,

I am using PDFXChange Pro v8.0.343.0.

I have converted a MS .doc and .docx file to PDF with the Word 2019 print function as PDF/A 3b file. Bizarrely the following fonts are embedded into the resulting PDF file:

ArialMT
Calibri

Despite the fact that these fonts are actually not used in the original .doc and .docx files.

When I open the file in PDF-XChange Editor v8.0.343.0 I make the file editable and then save it optimised but instructing the software to remove the ArialMT and Calibri fonts that do not exist in the source .doc / .docx files.

How can I unembedd these two fonts from the PDF file?
If that does not work, how can I force unembed these unwanted fonts?

I can make all files - source Word files and PDF files - available for further investigation.

Thanks!

Regards,

Hi, Christian Flatscher

to clarify, when you say you converted with the word 2019 print function, do you mean you used Ctrl+P, selected our PDF-Xchange Standard/lite printer, and configured the settings within our printer to print to PDF/A 3b? Or did you make use of Words "export to PDF" function, or possible our PDF-Xchange office toolbar addin to do the conversion?

If you could share some copies of the files, that would certainly be very helpful for investigating this. If they contain sensitive information, please email support@pdf-xchange.com with the files, and include a link to this post for context.

Thank you, Daniel.

I have e-mailed all to support@pdf-xchange.com. Subject line of the mail is the same as this forum entry - Strange behaviour of PDFXPrinter and not removing unused font (subset).

I am converting the Word file with the Print command:

File -> Print. Then I change the printer properties and select PDF/A 3b. Once I have done this I print the document.

I also saved the file as rich text file. This is what I observed:

All non European fonts are changed to some MS font, e.g. under the text "Before installing this product, read the Safety Information." there is an entry in Arabic. In the original document the chosen font is Droid Arabic Naskh. However in the .rtf file it is changed to Arial. Trying to change the font back to Droid Arabic Naskh does not work at all. The font remains firmly as Arial. I do not know if this can be bypassed or changed.

Thank you for investigating this issue for me and I wish you a Happy New Year!

Regards,

Hi, Christian Flatscher

I have replied to your email, but wanted to followup here publicly. Beyond the issues which I believe are caused by MS word (detailed in my email), The main issue of unembedding is something which I have created a new ticket for specifically.

RT#5413: Bug: Save as optimized, Unembed fonts manually doesn't work

While you cannot look this up yourself, you can ask here for an update on the progress in the future.

Many thanks for your feedback, Daniel.

Hopefully it will not take too long for getting the font unembedding corrected.

Thanks!
