Color printing issue

Post by BrianG »

I have a color printing issue similar to what has been reported by others. Printing this document from Editor to a Dell 3130cn results in mostly grayscale with some hints of color yet the document prints fine from Viewer and Adobe Acrobat 9. This leads me to believe that the problem is not with the system color profiles unless I misunderstand how the system color profiles work (not applicable to all apps?). This is a work PC so monkeying with system color profiles is not appealing. Should I pursue it or might there be something else affecting the color print.

Hello Brian,

Thank you for your report.

In most cases the printing colors are affected by the color profiles.

The main suspect is the color profile that comes with the monitor, but there are many cases that printing is affected by other color profiles as well.

The standard action in such cases is for us to ask the user to temporally move all the color profiles to some folder and to test the printing again.
If you are unable to do that, you can at least search for a color profile that has the brand/model of the monitor in its file name, and move only this one.

Regards.

The fact that color printing of this document is only a problem for Editor is why I question that color profiles could be the cause. Wouldn't color profiles affect all printing, regardless of the application? Wouldn't they also affect all documents? In my case, the problem seems specific to one document and only when it is printed from Editor.

Hello Brian,

Thank you for feedback.

I'm not sure about which profile is used by all other applications
but many of them are using their own color profiles.

As for our, it uses several, which may affect how the file look.

It is possible for the problematic color profile to affect only certain colors,
that are present in the document,
and thus to mislead that every other document is looking fine.

If you provide us with a copy of that file, and a picture of the printed result,
perhaps we can identify the problem at our end.

I have checked the Color Management Options in Viewer and Editor, they are the same except for "Use Black Point Compensation" being enabled in Editor. Turning it off didn't make a difference.

I have also now discovered that all color documents print in grayscale from Editor. I recently upgraded from 8.0.336.0 to 8.0.337.0 (both portable) so I fired up 8.0.336.0 and color printing works fine. I'm reverting back to 8.0.336.0.

Hello Brian,

Could you please try with the portable version of the latest PDF Editor 8.0.339.0?

Also, please check if this option is not enabled:

The "Override document colors" is disabled so that isn't the problem.

I will report back once I've had time to get 8.0.339.0 running and tested.

That didn't take long. The lack of color printing is the result of using the settings.dat file from 8.0.336.0.

The loss of my heavily modified UI (ribbons and toolbars) would be devastating so I'm going to have to stay with .336 unless there is a way to fix its settings.dat file for use in the newer versions.

Hi, BrianG

Could I ask you to zip up that Settings.dat file and send it to us here for further investigation?

When I went to zip settings.dat I noticed portable.dat. As a test I copied both files from my 8.0.336.0 to an extracted 8.0.339.0 and the color printing problem appears to be resolved. Until now the only .dat file I had been copying was settings.dat.

Note to self: When upgrading portable, copy the following to the new version
history.dat (optional)
settings.dat
portable.dat
\SearchProviderIcons
\Security
\Stamps

Color printing has stopped working again so I was wrong when I thought replacing the .dat files had fixed it. I obviously did something that temporarily fixed it; now I just need to figure out what that was. I'll print color docs with Viewer for now.

My problem was resolved with the exceptional direct assistance of Tracker Software support folks Daniel, Stefan, and Paul who worked to identify the cause as the "Color Override" option located in the Advanced Printing configuration accessible via the "More" button on the Print dialog box. Changing it from "Grayscale" to "Color" or "Auto" solves the problem. "Auto" is what they recommend for a default.

Thank you guys. I am very appreciative of your personalized attention.
