The "file rename" function has a feature which is handy, but maybe confusing:
It adds (nearly) always the extension "pdf"
Example:
I have "hello.pdf" and rename it to ..
- "test": It is named to "Test.pdf"
- "new.txt" -->> new.txt.pdf
- "foo.pdf" -->> "foo.pdf"
The problem is: the user does not see that the software is more intelligent then the user himself ...
When you modify the rename-dialogue to a box which shows the name and the extension separated (see example from XnView), then the behaviour and the expected result would be more clear.

Re: File rename: handling of extension
Hi, Peter2
The File rename function does no allow saving to other formats as it is designed to "keep the file open" (actually closes, renames and quickly reopens, but it should feel like it doesn't close), as we cannot directly edit in other formats, allowing this would defeat the purpose, since any further edits after that point would result in saving the document as a PDF once again. If you wish to export the PDF to another format, such as txt, please use the tool on the "convert" tab to do so.
Kind regards,

Re: File rename: handling of extension
Hi Daniel
thanks, but I don't really want to modify or change extension; I only wanted to suggest that a separated - and greyed out - file-extension would clearly show what the software does (and what you explained).

Hi, Peter2
In that case, thank you for the suggestion, I cannot make any promises, but will see what the dev team thinks about this idea.

Re: File rename: handling of extension
Hi Daniel,
This is also the reason why renaming an open file updates the "Modified" time stamp, which in some cases might be undesirable.
There is already this recent thread where a respective improvement has been discussed and requested for implementation, if possible.
Best regards
David
I believe that this is not the case currently, instead PDF-XChange Editor keeps the file open, does a "Save As" under the new name and then deletes the file with the previous name from disk.TrackerSupp-Daniel wrote: ↑Tue May 19, 2020 9:12 pmThe File rename function [...] closes, renames and quickly reopens, but it should feel like it doesn't close [...]

Hi, David.P
You are correct, my apologies. It seems I had one of our recent conversations on how the new handling could work in mind here, thank you for catching that.
