Saving a PDF after compressing images fails

Post by Puffolino »

I have some PDFs of scanned books which are quite large (200 MB or so) and I want to archive them by shrinking the size...

Some of them can be optimized, other's don't - whatever I try with these files, I'll get a message as soon I want to save a changed PDF which shows something like:

Cannot save Document Name
An error occured while saving the document to the file C:\...\documentfile.pdf
Error [Pdf Structure Library]: insufficient memory.

Interestingly, there's no error when I change the size/position of an image or delete it from the document - saving is done with no problem. But as soon a recompression of a single image will have been done, saving will fail.

When I am able to find a smaller document which does not work, I will upload it.

Hello Puffolino,
can you please send us a screenshot of your current "performance" settings from the Editors Preferences menu (Ctrl+K).

I look forward to seeing an example document, if you are unable to find a smaller alternative, please send us an email <support@pdf-xchange.com.com> and we can send steps to make us of our upload server.

Kind regards,

Maybe "Always use Incremental Save" is active via File/Edit > Preferences > Documents ?

Here are my preference settings...

...meanwhile I mailed also a test file.

Thanks for investigating this - BTW it would be fine if the "Recompress Image" function would allow to recall the previously used compression options.

Thank you for the info and email Puffolino.

I have received that email and managed to reproduce this on multiple devices here as well. as such the dev team is now aware of the issue and will be working on it as soon as possible. Unfortunately it does not seem we will be able to bring this quickly enough to appear in the upcoming release (build 332), but it should be coming in one of the builds coming after that.

Hi! Is this a regression? As in it worked properly in previous builds (ie. 331) but not in the latest release (332).

I'd test it myself but I'm not at a location I am able too.

Hi Special,

Not quite, there is a very specific case that causes this process to not work as intended, it seems to be present in a number of previous builds, and we are working on a proper resolution in the meantime.

Hi,
any hint if this issue could be solved in the near future?

I've pronlongued my license 'cause the recent release updates...
...did some tests, a lot of my files can't be edited because of this problem. BTW some other documents get a much larger file size as soon I do changes (even when deleting pages)

Thanks.

Hello Puffolino,

Could you please tell us, whether the same behavior reproducible with the latest version?

Rgeards.

Hi Dimitar,

still the same with the actual version (build 334).
You could give it a try using the example file I've sent to the support (subject "Topic P135494 - Saving PDF after compression")

Cheers.

Hi Puffolino,

the issue is still present in the current build, the ticket is still open and being worked on.

I have raised the priority of the ticket, but considering it is already being worked on I am not sure this will result in a fix arriving sooner.

Hopefully it will be in the next build slated for before Christmas.
Best regards
