Possible end of support for PDF-Xchange SDK

Post by visual approvals »

Hi Guys
I want to clarify some points around some advice we received from Tracker a little while ago as regards ongoing availability and support for the SDK.
My understanding is that Tracker has decided to end support and supply of the SDK due to , in part, some elements doing the wrong thing.

I understand that position but remain confused as we have just received a renewal request with options to renew the SDK for a 1 or 2 year term. I am at a loss to understand the mixed messages and would like to know if our existing investment in the SDK can continue to be used let alone further developed.
Thank you

Hello Visual Approvals,

Our current official statement can be read here: https://www.pdf-xchange.com/compan ... s/view/207
After much deliberation and evaluation, we at Tracker Software Products, have come to the very difficult decision that Version 8, to be released Spring of 2019, should be the last iteration of our SDK product line. Regretfully, the levels of developers not adhering to our SDK licensing, misuse and abuse of the Terms and Conditions there within . Such issues and the level of support and development required to maintain and improve, in both time and dollars has forced us to take a hard look at continuing to provide SDKs moving forward. And allow us to focus more attention to the growing use of our End User products.
Following this, we intend for V8 to have a multiple year lifetime, a 2 year renewal should still see much coverage. We are still providing build updates to the SDK throughout the lifetime of V8, and would only be making it unavailable when V9 is released.

Moving past this, we have been looking at alternate paths we can take to avoid discontinuing the SDK's as we had announced earlier this year, but at this time nothing concrete enough for us to redact our prior statement has arrived. As in the article above, the largest issue is with how many developers are not adhering to our SDK Licensing, leaving us with little choice in the matter. Do know that as soon as we have any concrete information on this front, we will most certainly be posting a news article on the topic in our news section: https://www.pdf-xchange.com/compan ... ess_events

Thank you
I appreciate the candid response, however I would like a clear indication off what is meant by '....and would only be making it unavailable when V9 is released'
Does this mean that we will loose our licence to use the V8 SDK along with no further updates?

For our purpose the SDK is quite satisfactory and our use of it to produce a modest in-place viewer inside our app has wide acceptance amongst our users.

Hello Visual approvals,

My apologies for the vagueness there.

No, we would not stop providing troubleshooting assitance, so nothing would actually change in terms of support (despite being the "end of support")

The SDK's would simply become unavailable for purchase, and would not be seeing future updates or bugfixes. Any already existing clients, such as yourself, would still have access to the files for download, and license key (by signing into your user account), and be able to continue distribution (to the upper limit of your license agreement) but you would be unable to renew the maintenance, and would be using an aging version with no updates available.

Aside from that, we will likely still provide critical security patches, as we have done for our other discontinued products, such as the Viewer. Despite many years of its "ended support", we do still provide technical support for it, even today, and plan to for as long as possible. There is simply no further development going on for it, and it is not available for sale. The SDK's would work the same way, seeing no updates, bug fix, features, or otherwise (excepting the possibility of security patches, as earlier mentioned).

Of course, as time goes on, as with any discontinued product, new issues will arise that we may not be able to resolve, and unfortunately as a discontinued product, there is nothing to be done about that, but you do not need to worry about there being a flat cut off date for support. We at Tracker Software pride ourselves in being able to provide some of the fastest and most personable service in the industry, even for our discontinued products.
