How to insert symbols

I am looking to put a star by places I need to call high attention to in order to remember to get answers from my financial advisor. I can't find anywhere to insert a start or big question mark or any symbol.

Have you tried the sticky note tool?
You have a star symbol there readily available:

And if you need a style that is not available there - you can create your own custom stamps with any visual appearance:

And then once you've marked up your file - you can open the comments pane - and will see all these comments you've added, and can click on them to quickly navigate to the location where you placed them, so going through the file with those markers in place will also be easier.
