No cropping white space - what's wrong?

Post by Peter2 » Fri Mar 08, 2019 12:40 pm

PDF XChange Editor 7.0 328.2, TEST-Version

I try to crop white space from a PDF, and it ssem to be cropped correctly. But when I send this cropped PDF to a plotter with PDF-coontroller, it calculates the original, umcropped white space.

When I start the crop command again, I can see that the crop-dialogue shows the white space too.

What's wrong? My usgae or the demo version?
(With pdf-tools I failed too.)

Hello Peter,

Please try the "Resize Pages" option with the checkbox to "Scale page content" turned off.
This will effectively make the whole page smaller, while when you "crop" you just redefine the crop area, but the "media box" - or the whole canvas on which content can be placed remains unchanged, and it seems your plotter uses this to calculate the dimensions.

Regards,
Stefan

Thanks, Stefan, that's the trick. I need also the option "Fit size of media-box to crop box" - then the area is really cropped ...

Hi,

I wish I could have this option in the "Crop Pages" dialog

ResizePage-20190208.png
So I could crop and resize the page in one step.

Hi Andy,

Actually - "Adjust size of the pages' Media Box checkbox should make it so that later the plotter recognizes the new cropped page size.

Hi,

ahh, thank you.

I think the string Adjust size of the pages' Media Box to the size of Crop Box could be miss understood. Could you perhaps use a clearer/unambiguous description?

e.g. "Reduce page size to cropped size" or something similar wording

Hi Andy,

The thing is that this is the correct technical description! :)
The PDF specification defines that a Page is described with a few "boxes" - the largest one that all others must be inside of is the Media box.
This is a good explanation of what each box is - and why the Media box is important:

It may be that this is the correct technical description, but the description should explain to a user what this function does.
I think the description is much too technical.

Thanks Andy,

Your input is appreciated and I will pass it along to the devs for consideration of changing/updating this description!

Hi Andy,

I've spoken with a colleague in the dev team and they told me that we will change the text for that label to "Adjust the Page size to match the cropped area". Hope that clarifies things!

Cheers,
Stefan
