How to make properties of Pencil Tool persist?

Post by sjleejf »

Hi,

I always want to use the Pencil Tool at Opacity 80%. So I set it to 80%.

But, after using some tool other than Pencil, I come back and click on Red pencil of the Shape Style, and I find that the Opacity has been reset to 100% again.

So I'm having to change the Opacity to 80% every time!

PDF-Xchange Editor is not remembering the last setting that I used.

Is there a way to make properties stick? Is this a bug?

Thanks a lot!!

Hello,

To me it seems like you will have to make a 'clone' of one of the pencil-presets and then customize its properties.

In case you select one of the presets, then modify one or more of its properties, and "Make Current Properties Default", it only works correctly for as long as you do not select one of the other presets. In case you return to the original preset, the properties of its original installation are back. At that time, clicking "Apply default properties" does not apply anymore the things you had modified to the properties of the pencil-tool.

So, my solution:
- right-click the pencil-tool,
- click Comment Styles Palette,
- click Clone (in the dialog-box toolbar),
- modify the Properties (of this clone) as you like,
- give it a name as you like (via Rename in the toolbar),
In this manner, you can create as many clones as you need.
- when done, close the Comment Styles Palette.

More info:

To test if it works:
- right-click the Pencil-tool,
- select your customized pencil,
- draw something on an open PDF.

Best regards.

Hi sjleejf,

Thanks for your query. The opacity level, and the other settings of the Pencil Tool, should be remembered by PDF-XChange Editor both during your current session and in subsequent sessions. I believe this issue may be caused by the manner in which you are adjusting the opacity setting. If you want to set the opacity level (or any other property) of the current pencil tool annotation and all subsequent annotations of the same type, then it is necessary to make the changes to the property via the Format tab, as opposed to the Properties pane (which updates the properties for only the current annotation, in which case PDF-XChange Editor will not remember the settings for subsequent annotations). The format tab becomes available when you select any commenting tool, as detailed in the image below. If you make your desired changes to the Pencil tool (or any other tool) there, then they will be remembered from that point forwards.

Hope that helps,

Sean

Hi Sean Godley,

I have tried to change the property via the Format tab, as you said. But I still find that the properties of the default styles ("Red", "Purple", "Blue", etc. that come pre-installed) are not remembered.

Hi Willy Van Nuffel,

As you said, the properties of the cloned styles are remembered. Thanks a lot.

Hello sjleejf,

Apologies for the misunderstanding, Sean meant the toolbar "default" will retain the changes. You will find this by making any changes to the tool without saving it, and then closing the Editor (or deselecting the tool, as shown in this Gif):
DMKB19January1111.gif
Upon re-selecting the tool (without selecting one of our many "Factory defaults") the "default" tool does retain the last used style.

With that said, I am glad that Willy's Hint was helpful for you, and I wish you all the best!
