Print to File

Post by Thomas_Schmidt »

Hello from Germany,

I found this question was already posted in 2014. We want to use the command line /print or /Printto to print into a given [Path]filename.

According to the online manuals V7 it is still not possible or simply not documented?

Thank you for a quick answer,
BR Thomas

Hello Thomas,

This would depend on the situation at hand. While there is no /print command, all available commands for our PDFSaver utility are listed here: https://help.pdf-xchange.com/pdfxs7/
It does sound as if you need a specific application to directly use our print function however, If this is a self developed application, our SDK products may serve you better.
Conversely, if you only need to convert batches of files, Our PDF-Tools suite offers batch conversion functions as well, and has plenty of built in command line functions, and you can set these up to be used with custom tools as well.

Can I ask exactly what use case scenario you are going for, so that we can assist in finding the best solution for you?

Hello Daniel,

for the November problem, we did manage to use more or less MS Windows standard print features. But now we do have the same problem at another client again. We could do tehs ame thing, but this time is is amuch bigger project and we have time issues. The workflow takes simply too long.

We use the PDF Exchange Editor to convert PDF files into print data streams, mostly Hewlett-Packard PCL5 data format. We use any MS Windows print driver for that. The port (better the print processer was replaced and we are able to capture the file).

Another way is to generate a local port , like for example d:\PDF2PCL\MyFile.prn This works as well, but then there is for parallel printing for each device a new unique port needed.

So the easiest known way for us today is to print to the port FILE and provide the file name in the /printto command line parameter. So we can continue use PDF Exchange Editor in a simple way. It is something like the Adobe Reader /T command line argument.

Hope this helps a little more our wished solution.

BR

Hello Thomas,

Please allow me to ask a feq questions, the answers to which will hopefully help us understand the situation better.
You have posted in the Editor section - so are you using the Editor to print existing PDF files to a printer/file?
Or is it that you want to generate multiple PDF files?

If you are trying to print multiple PDFs to a different location/device - have you tried the PDF Tools - it can be run through the command line, and has a "Print all input documents" command.

Regards,
Stefan
