[Feature Request in Discussion] Apply PDFTools batch processing functions to open documents in PDF X Change Editor

Post by daniel_lutz »

Based on the request here, it would be quite nice if it would be possible to easily apply the batch processing functions created in PDF Tools to the opened documents in the PDF X Change Editor. So as menu item "PDF Tools" and then you could configure whether you would only see your favorites and/or your own created functions as direct pinned access or just individually selected functions.

Best regards

Daniel

Hello Daniel,

Thank you for your suggestion. I am not sure this is possible, but I do suspect it is. I have created a feature request for you and will discuss this with the project management team.

Sincerely,
If posting files to this forum, you must archive the files to a ZIP, RAR or 7z file or they will not be uploaded.
Thank you.

I would be happy if this would work, technically perhaps not quite trivial but certainly not not impossible. Let's see what comes out of the internal discussions.

Re: [Feature Request] Apply PDFTools batch processing functions to open documents in PDF X Change Editor  SOLVED

Hi Daniel,

Just as an FYI - This is extremely unlikely to be implemented. I suspect Patrick may not of known what would go into a feature like this. As far as I see it, there are two primary scenarios for implementation:
  1. PDF-Tools itself processes documents that are open in the Editor
This isn't really viable, because it means that we'd need to remove the file lock on documents opened in the Editor. The only way to do that safely is an enormous undertaking, with little practical call to justify the effort and expense of developing it.
  2. The Editor gains its own batch processing functions to handle this.
This is the less likely of the two, because it essentially means that by implementing those features in the Editor, we're competing with ourselves by making the Editor compete with PDF-Tools. That doesn't make any commercial sense.
I suspect some middle ground will need to be met and we'll e.g. implement something like an 'export current session' in the Editor that can then be opened and worked on by PDF-Tools. There would be other possibilites as well.

Thanks,

Hey Will,

Of course I don't know the internal staff, but the two paths are understandable and why they would make no economic sense. The 3rd way, which has been described as the middle way, would of course be conceivable. In addition, you can create links to external programs in the editor with the option of specifying parameters. Then you could state something like

[path to exe]\PdftTools.exe[number of batch script to run] --currentSession

Then, when the parameter is called, the editor would recognize that all open documents are closed, the list of paths is passed to PDF Tools, and after PDFTools has finished, the editor will open the list again.

That would certainly be conceivable as a scenario.

Hello Daniel,

You are correct that it should be possible, and yes a middle ground option would be necessary. After speaking with our colleagues, we have decided that the sessions method will suggested would likely be the best option if it is to be implemented, and as such I have created an internal feature request for it.
As before, we cannot guarantee it will be implemented, nor can I give any sort of a timeline. However, I can certainly promise that when we are next reviewing new features, it will be seriously considered.

Have an excellent day!

Nice to hear and also understandable that you can't promise anything until it is finally built in. If you should decide against it at some point it would be nice when you can post this here. Then you have an overview of what has already been requested.

If it should not come I would hope that sometime a better script function for the editor comes (I have already mentioned the topic) so that you can write the automation yourself. It then saves switching between two programs.
