PDF-Download in Internet Explorer

Post by Berecz »

when I click on a PDF-Download-Link, the file opens in Internet Explorer with the PDF-XChange Editor Plugin, which I do not want.
How can I prevent Internet Explorer from doing this?

Hello Berecz,

Please navigate to:
C:\Program Files\Tracker Software\PDF Editor (or the Editor's installation folder if different from the default), and rename these two files:
iePDFXEditPlugin.x64.dll
iePDFXEditPlugin.x86.dll
to e.g. old_iePDFXEditPlugin.x64.dll
And then IE should start asking you to save your files and open them in the stand alone IE.

Stefan

Is this same procedure valid for opening on PDF-Xchange editor itself? When I click on download pdf in Chrome it opens pdf in PDF-Xchange editor instead download pdf to the folder! Thanks!

Hello master972,

So it seems like Chrome is already doing this for you? Downloading the file and then directly opening it in our Editor!
Or is it that you want Chrome to download the files, but then do not open them automatically?

Once you open a PDF with the current behaviour - please right click on the tab with the file name, and navigate to the folder in which this file resides, and share the link with us!

Stefan

Hi all!
I'm sorry for the intrusion but why I can't open my pdf files in the browser using PDF xchange viewer. It is set as default pdf viewer and Chrome is ok.
Any ideas?

Hello Bitman,

Welcome to our forums.
I am afraid that modern browsers in their attempt to be as secure as possible have removed the tools that we needed to be able to provide our browser plug-ins and at present only older versions of Chrome/FF and IE are the only ones that will still support those plug-ins that are needed.

Hi Stefan, thanks on reply re this matter!

Here is the requested link F:\downloads\Copyright Information (17).pdf
It seems it is download folder where all Chrome downloads are downloaded.

Yes, I want Chrome to download the files, but then do not open them automatically. Also I can't choose anymore folder to download pdf as it opens directly in PDF-XC.

Depending on the Version of chrome you are running, this options can be changed, but I believe the newest version gives you the option to save or save as, and may be default always open downloaded files...
This article may help if you are using an older version of chrome: https://www.addictivetips.com/web/how-t ... in-chrome/

However, your advice worked!
Thanks much!

Hello Stefan,
as you proposed in #2, I renamed iePDFXEditPlugin.x64.dll and iePDFXEditPlugin.x86.dll, and then IE started asking to save my file.
But after the latest updates of IE, the file opens in Internet Explorer with the PDF-XChange Editor Plugin, which I do not want.
How can I prevent IE again from doing this?

Hello Berecz,

Please try setting this registry key to empty string, and let us know if that helps!
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\MIME\Database\Content Type\application/pdf]
"CLSID"=""

Stefan

Hello Stefan,

I set the registry key
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\MIME\Database\Content Type\application/pdf]
"CLSID"=""
It did not help.

Hello Berrecz,
I just want to verify, you mentioned before that Stefan's suggestion in #2 worked, have you updated the Editor since doing this? if so, you may need to do it once more as those files will be replaced during an update.

I have not updated the Editor since doing this.
The files still are renamed as iePDFXEditPlugin.x64~.dll and iePDFXEditPlugin.x86~.dll.
But this is possibly irrelevant, because the .pdf file now opens in Internet Explorer no more with the PDF-XChange Editor Plugin, but with the PDF-XChange Editor main program.

Well, If that is the desired outcome, I am glad to hear it is working!
Beyond that, I know that IE should prompt by default for wether you wish to open, save, or save as the file, but I am not sure if it is possible to stop it from opening that file afterwards.
If IE is not prompting you like it should be, these steps should help to revert that setting:
1. Open an Internet Explorer browser and click the gear icon to open Tools. (You can also press Alt + x to open Tools.) Then click Internet Options > Security tab.
2. Click the Custom level button to open the Security Settings.
3. Scroll down to the Downloads heading and select Enable for automatic prompting, file downloads, and font downloads.
4. Click OK, and when asked if you are sure, click Yes.
5. Click OK again.
6. Close all Internet Explorer windows, and then re-open Internet Explorer and attempt the download again.

The settings were alredy as you proposed.
I now set the default pdf reader to Microsoft Edge and then IE started asking to save or start my file.
To open a .pdf file in Explorer with PDFXEdit.exe, I must now use the context menu.
Please let me know if there is a more elegant way to do this.

I am afraid that if there is a more elegant way, I do not personally know it, IE tends to make many things more clunky than thy need to be. I will leave a note about this thread for my colleagues in the European office to take a look here. If any of them know of a better way, they will be sure to chime in here :)
Until then, Best of luck to you!
