Continuous Bates numbering over a number of PDFs

Post by Victor Warner »

I have a number of individual PDFs.

I would like to number them using Bates numbering.

Although with PDFX-Change Editor and PDF-Tools it is possible to apply Bates numbering over the PDFs, however for each file the number starts from 1.

What I would like to do is for the numbering to continue across the PDFs.

I know it is possible to merge the PDFs together and then apply Bates numbering, but do so would then require me to split the resulting PDF back into the separate PDFs and rename each one.

I cannot see an option with Bates numbering to permit continuous numbering across a number of PDFs.

Is this something that it is possible to do?

Hmm... I've tested Editor right now - for me it working fine.

I use Organize->Bates Numbering->Add to Multiply Files (Ribbon UI) or
Documents->Bates Numbering->Add to Multiply Files (Classic Toolbars)
Add Bates to Multiply Files
Add Bates to Multiply Files

Update: Pdf-Tools don't work in the same way. Each file is numbered from 1 ....
It seems to me that this is a bug or a lack of an option for setup Bates Numbering.

Just to confirm that an option to choose whether to "restart from 1" or to "continue the page numbering", when multiple documents are selected, is missing in PDF-XChange Editor as well as in PDF-XChange Tools.

So, please Tracker Support create a ticket for adding such an option ?

Helllo guys,

If we are talking about the Editor, there are two commands for Bates Numbering - the first one adds the Bates Numbering to one document and the other one adds it to me multiple documents. In the Bates Numbering macro, you can set the starting number along with the number of digits that should be displayed. Also, Prefix and Suffix can be added if needed. In case of the multiple documents, each subsequent document will have the Bates Number that is greater by 1 from the previous document's last page.

This option won't be added, because the Bates Numbering itself has a different idea:

Header and Footer can be used for normal page numbering and, if needed, can be formatted in the same way.

As for the PDFTools - it should work as the Editors Multiple Document Bates Numbering. I will check whether the behavior that you mentioned recreates.

Cheers,
Alex

Thanks Alex for your answer.

1) So, when we have a range of documents for which we like the pages to be numbered:
> consecutively, from the first page of the first document to the last page of the last document, we should use the "Bates Numbering";
> starting from 1 for every next document, we should use "Header and Footer".

That is clear.

2) For what concerns the PDF-Tools V7 "Bates Numbering" applied to a range of documents resulting in a restart from 1 for every document, should be a bug ...

Best regards.

I would not consider the tools issue a bug, it is intended, as the bates numbering is applied and calculated at the document level; whereas inside the editor, as the documents are already opened, it can be calculated at the application level across all the documents.
However it would certainly be considered as a feature, an as such a feature request has been made regarding it. :)
