Mouse cursor on UHD (4K) display too small or even disappears

Hello
I have a strange behavior on two computers, both with 4K display (with the latest version 7):
the mouse cursor is extremely small (while Icons and toolbars are great). This is the case only in PDF-XChange Editor, not in other programs.
For example the text selection tool: right of the text the cursor has the correct size (no 1 in the screenshot) as set in Windows 10 preferences. But going to the left near the text it changes it size to a very small one (no 2 in screenshot).

In this example the cursor is at least visible. In other tools (for example comment) the cursor is absolutely non visible.

Is there a chance of reproducing and fixing it?
If you need further information please let me know.

Thanks a lot and best wishes
Daniel

Hello Chappy,

Thank you for the post. Could you please try going File> Preferences> General and set the UI scaling to system scale? You will need to restart the Editor in order for the settings to take effect.

I hope this helps!

Hi Patrick

unfortunately no. I tried all three possibilities. The cursor remains extremely small or even hidden.
  • The "select text" tool works fine.
  • The highlighter works, but with a small cursor
  • The sticky note, the textbox and the typewriter doesn't work at all: no cursor visible
Thanks
Daniel

Hello Chappy,
Thank you for the post. On my 4K screen, I am not seeing the issues you have described. The cursors all seem to be large enough for me to see. Could you please go to Help> About and let me know what version and build you are running? Within windows, please go to Start> Settings> System> Display and let us know at what percentage and resolution is set as under "Scale and layout".

Thank you!

Hi Patrick

version is build 323.2 (ver. 7).
resolution is 3840x2160
It's strange:
1.) in my spectre with 13.3" screen it seems to work fine, when I use the suggested 300%.
But this is a bit too big on my notebook. I've tested 250% and 225%. And it's ok there as well.

2.) but on my desktop, same versions, but a large 40" screen there I have the problem.
I can use any percentage (even 300%) the mouse arrow is large but the cross is too small.
Strange. I'll try to reinstall my desktop. Perhaps there is a problem with...I don't know;-).

I keep you informed.

Thanks
Daniel

Hello Daniel,

I am also on a 4K 40'' display, and I do not use any windows scaling on that - scaling is at 100% in Windows for me, and I have not noticed any cursor changes here.
Can I ask if the Desktop 4K screen is the only (or primary) display, or are there others also attached to the system?

Regards,
Stefan

Hi Stefan
it is the only screen.
Please wait wir further investigation. I will completely reinstall my computer these days due to other strange problems.
Perhaps it will be solved then.

I will tell you in some days.

Thanks a lot
Daniel

Its a curious issue for sure, Id also like to know, are you by any chance using a mouse cursor different from the windows default? Its possible that the cursor pack is whats not scaling properly.

I am using current version (324,3) with UHD 43" display (no scaling, 100% system) and testet all settings in preferences. No success: very very tiny hand/pointer in comments, text selction, hand, edit,… – working is almost impossible.

Any ideas how to solve that?

Norbert

We are currently working on including a larger cursor set in the coming builds. As an interim fix though, you can turn on windows settings that help you find the mouse when you've lost it.
Simply open the start menu and search for mouse settings, you will see a screen you can click "Additional mouse options" on, in that menu is an option to show the location of the pointer when you press CTRL

I hope this helps!

Thanks for this hint – I am working with this technique, because this is currently the only way for me working whith the editor anyway. Placing comments with this method works, as long if you can accept placement "near by" which is often not possible, e.g. if you want to point out word corrections. The main reason for me using editor.

Please, place a notice here on fix release, to get me informed instantly.

Norbert

Hello Norbert and all,

The topic is originally a bit older. Can you please make sure you are on the latest build (324.3) and then test these options:
scale.png
And see if with any of them your cursors get to a normal size?

Stefan

As I described I tested all settings without success:

„Usfull sized cursors“ currently are
  • select Comments
(That´s it)

Hello

very strange, some week ago it seemed to work. But now no luck any more. No idea what's wrong.
Some cursors are small but visible. But the comment tool cursor is nearly unvisible.
I have 324.3.

Thanks for helping

Hi Daniel,

As our Daniel wrote, we should be adding some improvements to this for 325 and 326 as well.

I do hope that build 325 resolves this issue for you!
Sincerely,

I have installed yesterday version 7.0.325.1 of PDF-X-Change Pro. Status: unusable.

The hand cursor is still that small as described. Adding comments is not acceptable, because there is NO CURSOR, as soon as I switch to comments. Only inside a comment or on a comment a very small arrow is displayed.

Obviously, PDFX-Change expects a scaling of the system, if there is a higher resolution. Because of that without scaling (factor = 100%), the cursor size is much too small (up to invisible).

Interesting: If a PDF-XChange-dialog is opened, the cursor size is correct – it seems as if the system deals with it correctly, the false size only is shown in „pdf grafics mode“.

If there is no fix asap. I have to switch to one of the competitors offers, where it works as required (tested with demo versions), because comments are/were the essential reason for me to use PDF-X-Change.

Hello NoSi,

I've just checked with a colleague from the dev team, and unfortunately he has confirmed that we still do not have all our cursors 4K ready. We are working on this, but I still do not have an exact time frame as to when higher resolution cursors will be available.

Regards,
Stefan

Hi Stefan,

Thanks for fast reply – regardless to undefined time frame. I still hope it is a small one, because comment-handling of PDFX-Change is (normally) outstanding in compare to others.

Hello guys,

All of the standard cursors have been updated and redrawn - now they will display correctly for 4k. This will be available from the next build (326).
Also, stay tuned for new cursors for tools/comments etc. (Not a 100% guarantee for 326 build but they are coming soon ;) )

Cheers,
Alex

I have build 327.1 installed, multiple monitors with a larger 4K monitor in the mix with Scaling set to 125% on the 4k monitor only. The Hand cursor and Select Comments cursors are still extremely small. The Select Text cursor when off of text is extremely small, but when I move the mouse over text it appears to become the size of the text which is much better. Cursor size is the same on all monitors.

Windows 10, Ver 1803, Build 17134.345
DisplayFusion Pro 9.3 (don't think this is affecting it though)

Let me know what other info you may need to help debug.

Hello geeffland,

As we have not been able to reproduce this on our end yet, can we try to eliminate any discrepancies between the systems? As much as it potentially could have no effect, it is still possible that DisplayFusion's window tweaks had an effect here. Could I ask you to temporarily disable all aspects of displayfusion and then restart the PC, after that testing the Editor with the Large or Extra Large pointer options enabled.
You can enable the new large pointers from the accessibility options under Preferences (Ctrl+K)

I exited DisplayFusion (but didn't restart). The mouse cursor stayed small. Changing the Accessibility settings didn't change the size of the cursor either. Just to make sure, the cursor size is only small inside the PDF viewing area. For toolbars, bookmarks, etc. it is ok. Also other programs don't notice the small cursor.

Any other troubleshooting data I can provide?

Thanks,
Greg

Hello Greg,

Have you powered off your monitor? I myself have two monitors - one 4K and one normal one. When I power off my displays and turn them on after some time, some programs do sometimes behave awkwardly - for instance Viber. The text and cursor itself become very small and only are fixed after the resize. Though these effects vary from time to time.

Cheers,
Alex

I have not powered off/on the monitor but I have noticed when at my home office (no 4K monitor) that the mouse cursor is still very small even on a 1080p 24" monitor. I'll check sometime also with just the laptop screen by itself.

Hello Greg,

Thank you for trying with displayfusion turned off, but restarting the PC is critical to that possibility working. Please verify that displayfusion will not launch on startup, as it can alter how windows handles many things, and those effects can still be in place even after the application is closed. Then restart the PC and verify that there is still an issue.

Beyond that, While we have seen issues in the past about small cursors on high resolution displayes, like your 4k monitor, never has someone mentioned that a 1080p monitor has issues. Could you please send screenshots depicting the issue on both the 4k and 1080p screens so that we can see what you mean by "small" cursors in this context.

I have tried the accessibility cursor size, and all sizes appear to show the same really small cursor. Tried changing, closing PDF XChange Editor, reopen, still no change.

I'll post an image of the cursor size with only 1080 monitors connected. This picture is from a 1080p monitor while hooked to the 4K monitor (2 1080p monitors and 1 4k monitor). Cursor is the small mark just above and slightly left of ANSI where the red arrow is pointing to. (This is with accessibility Cursor Size = Extra Large)

Greg

Try to enable and disable mouse-trails via Windows mouse settings, this switches GPU hardware acceleration of drawing the mouse-pointer. Does it make a difference?

So far 328.1 appears to be scaling the cursor correctly.

I am using "System Scale" and "Regular" cursor size. (Windows 10 64 bit)

Maybe I spoke too soon. Now I am having the small cursors again.

Any ideas of what could change between the install time and now that made the cursors shrink again? Windows 10 Scaling??

Seems like I had this happen on a previous version also, where new install worked, then a day or two later it was small cursors again.

Let me know what I can dig up to help debug this.

Thanks,
Greg

Windows 10 had decided on 125% scaling for the 4k monitor and 100% for others. I changed it back to 100% scaling on the 4k monitor and signed out and logged back in with 100% scaling and the cursor looks better.

Thanks,
Greg

Hello geeffland,

Dan asked me to take a look at this topic, as I am also using a 4K screen, but mine is also physically large - so I do not use any system scaling, and have never had any issues with mouse cursors. What I can suggest is for you to try and reset all the Editor settings (make sure to back them up first!), and see if that will help with the cursor size!

Regards,
Stefan

My screen grab software isn't working, but I'm here to confirm that this bug is back. I'm on a 4k monitor run from a GTX1060 with Windows 10.

Let me know if there is any additional info I can provide to help you run this bug into the ground.

I really rely on this software for my work...

This bug seems to have shown up for me. Went into "windows display settings" (search from start menu) and set the "scale and layout" to 100%

Then went into xchange editor
File --> Preferences --> General --> UI Scaling --> and selected "No Scale (System DPI)

Rebooted computer.

Now it works.
