Search pane - start closed / close it per double-click
Hi guys,
when I search using the search pane and close the document afterwards the search pane is open when I launch the application the next time.
Is there a way to tell PDF-Xchange Editor to always start with a closed (collapsed) search pane?
If not, please consider this as a feature request.
Alternatively/Additionally I can imagine a setting that closes the pane with a double-click somewhere in the document. That would save the user from searching and clicking the small upper right cross or the pane separator.
Just an idea. Keep on rocking

Hello Sandstone,
Please go to Edit -> Preferences -> Page Display and take a look at the options there under the "Initial Display" category. You can set it so that every time you open the Editor it opens in a default state and does not "Restore the last user view of documents: custom layout and visibility of..." - this option is checked in by default.
Cheers,
Stefan

Re: Search pane - start closed / close it per double-click
It seems like there are a number of panes of which their status active/non-active is remembered and restored after closing and re-opening PDF-XChange Editor V6, and this independently of the "Initial Display" settings:
- Search pane
- Pan & Zoom
- Stamps palette
- Comment Styles palette
- Properties pane
So, there is no convenient answer for Sandstone.
I do not know if it would be interesting to have an option for these panes to define whether they should always be on or off, when starting PDF-XChange Editor V6 ? Maybe the most logical way of working is like it actually does: if a pane was used during a previous session, then chances are high that it will also be used during a new session.
Best regards.

Re: Search pane - start closed / close it per double-click
Thanks Stefan, but like Willy pointed out, that sadly didn't work.
@Willy: I disagree, I guess in 80% of the time you use the application as a pure viewer, the rest is searching and editing so I still see a point in having such an option. But maybe it's just like I use it, no idea.

Is this something covered by the new session manager?! If so then one could save a session with and one without these panes.

Hello Timur Born,
Thanks for the idea!
Indeed - just tested - created one session with the advanced search open, and another one with the search pane closed - and switching between sessions did toggle the search pane as well.
Cheers,
Stefan

Re: Search pane - start closed / close it per double-click
But how can this help in this situation?
The goal is to
- click on a PDF file and when it opens the search pane is closed or
- open PDF-Xchange Editor directly and when it opens the the search pane is closed
I don't see how the session manager settings could change that.

Re: Search pane - start closed / close it per double-click
Hello Sandstone,
If you load a session with the search pane closed, then close the Editor, all files you double click from here on should open with the search pane closed. So the sessions would be a quick way for you to switch between the search pane states (and can also load multiple files as well).
I know it's not exactly what you are after - but is still some idea you could try.
Regards,
Stefan

Re: Search pane - start closed / close it per double-click
Sorry, I don't get it.
1. I open a random PDF, make sure, the search pane is closed and save it as a session
2. I close the PDF-Xchange Editor
When I get you right that should make sure that from now on all PDFs are opened without the search pane initially visible
3. Now I open a random PDF where I have to use the search pane
4. With the search pane still opened I close the editor
5. I double click on another PDF and when it opens the search pane is visible (which shouldn't happen)

Re: Search pane - start closed / close it per double-click
What Sandstone needs is indeed something else than the new Session Manager.
Session Manager is useful for opening one or more particular documents in combination with the activation of particular panes, via one click from within File Explorer, or via a few clicks more, from within PDF-XChange Editor V6 (build 320.x).
To make that PDF-XChange Editor opens without active panes or with one or more particular panes when clicking whatever PDF from within File Explorer, or when starting the Editor via a shortcut, I think that there must be an additional check box in Edit > Preferences > Page Display, in the zone with the "Initial Display" options.
Besides the check box for "Restore last view of document: custom layout and visibility of document's panes such a bookmarks, thumbnails, etc.", there should be something like "Start PDF-XChange Editor with the following panes:", and then a range of check boxes for all the available panes. See design in attachment.
Best regards.

Some time has passed but I'm still curious if this setting has a chance to make it into a future version

Re: Search pane - start closed / close it per double-click
Are you looking for something like this checkbox?
Ive found that with it unchecked I open to documents with no panes at all consistently.

Re: Search pane - start closed / close it per double-click
This sounds promising, but unfortunately does not work for me:
1. The search pane is closed and this box is unchecked
2. Close PDF-Xchange Editor
3. Re-open it: no panes, ok so far
4. Load a PDF file
5. Hit CTRL+SHIFT+F: the search pane appears
6. Close PDF-Xchange Editor
7. Re-open it: the search pane is visible
This behaviour doesn't change no matter how this setting is set.
See Willy's answer above, there seem to be some panes that aren't affected by this setting.

Alright, I'll keep looking into solutions for you. Hopefully we can get to the bottom of it soon.
Could you export and post your Settings in here so I can test replicating the issue with your settings?

It's impossible to lead us astray for we don't care even to choose the way.

Re: Search pane - start closed / close it per double-click
I'm not sure what caused it, but after a restart its functioning the same way for me as it is for you guys... must have been a fluke.
Well, after a day working with that "Feature" I'm going to suggest it around the office. Just a heads up though, features are on the backburner for a few more patches until we iron out most of the kinks in the system.

Re: Search pane - start closed / close it per double-click
Similar thing happens with the Split command. If I create a vertical split in a document and close it out with out removing the split, the split view is retained if the file is re-opened. I would not expect that to happen with my Page Display options set the way they are.
Thanks.
Thanks.

The ability to set up a default session could be useful for this. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be such an option.
